And for good reason, since your father probably never operated a vacuum! But this is the 21st century, boys and girls, and guys need to buck up and do a little vacuuming, too. I work 60-70 hours a week, do all the family grocery shopping, and play with the kids when I get home. Yes, I change diapers, too. I have even been known to clean toilets. BUT I DIGRESS! This is supposed to be a review about a vacuum cleaner, for crying out loud.

A couple of years ago, my first Hoover WindTunnel finally bit the dust (pun fully intended) after about 8-10 years of dutiful regular use. I recall paying nearly $200 for that WindTunnel, which was self-propelled. However, by comparison, I think that this generation of WindTunnel is far more feature rich than my old WindTunnel. Here is my long list of nifty features on this WindTunnel that I never had on my old WindTunnel:

+ Closed-Loop Handle: Whoever thought of this was a genius. When vacuuming back and forth on carpet, having a loop is much more ergonomic than having a straight handle that must be grasped more firmly.

+ Foot-Controlled Roller On/Off: Why make people bend over to turn off the roller? This great feature makes it a snap to toggle between roller on and roller off for carpet versus hard floors.

+ Cord-Pinch Clip on Back of Vacuum: A simple innovation, this clip eliminates the need to use the little clip on the plug head to connect the cord to itself after winding it up on the back. Instead, you simply clip the end of the cord into this pinch clip. For the really creative, it also means that if you want to vacuum a small area, you don't have to unwind the entire cord. Instead, just unwind a bit, clip the cord into the pinch clip, and go about your vacuuming.

This is definitely a middle of the road vacuum. There are some features which I really like:

1. The on/off brush roll feature should be a "must" on very vacuum. If you have a home that is not entirely carpeted, you can push a button on the base of the vacuum with your foot and the brush roll will stop so you can vacuum on your hardwood floors (or linoleum or tile) without worrying about damaging the finish. Since the front of the vacuum is clear plastic - you can also easily see that the rollers have stopped spinning therefore you're not left guessing on whether you truly activated the on/off feature. In addition, when using the extension wand with one of the attachments, the ability to turn off the rollers will save your carpet. I've had other models that cannot be turned off and they have left roller burn marks on my carpet if I accidentally placed any pressure on the vacuum while reaching for those "hard-to-get-to" areas.

2. The bag indicator is a convenient feature. A full bag will result in less suctions and you also run the risk of distributing more dust. You can glance down while running your vacuum and see if the tab is green or red (red of course meaning that it's time to replace the bag).

3. The light on the front helps a great deal in "seeing" if you overlooked any elusive dirt.

4. I LOVE that the hose "clicks" into the base of the vacuum and that you have to lightly push a button to release the hose when you are ready to use the extension wand. Gone are the days of vacuuming and having the hose bump into your knee and become unattached (vacuuming is tedious enough without having to stop and reattach the hose).

Things that I found a bit disappointing:

1.

We've been through a number of both uprights and canisters. We had good luck with several units over the years, but they never seem to last more than a year or 2. I think that those 50 pound cast iron things that used to last for ever aren't really made anymore.

This unit replaces our former basic vac, that was also a Hoover, called the Tempo. It was also a basic upright model, with minimal features, that got the job done for a few years before it up and croaked. The Wind Tunnel seems to be built similar to the old Tempo, pretty basic, solid plastic, simple bag type design.

The weight is what you'd expect from a basic vacuum, its a bit heavy, so stairs are annoying. But stairs are always annoying anyway with any upright, except an electric broom. Noise level is not bad, especially over carpet, although its worse on hardwood floors.

The bag changing mechanism is pretty decent, it has a handle that you can carry the whole assembly to the trash and dispose of the bag without having to wrestle the bag out of the vac housing. Its a pretty nifty approach, although I worry that the plastic handle will break at some point. There's also another novel feature, where you can open up the bottom of the vac head around where the roller brush is in order to clear out things that get stuck there. We had Orecks for a few years, and you basically have to perform brain surgery on it to remove string or other soft objects that get wrapped around the brush wheel. So this feature is really cool for me, who is the universal handy man in the house.

It also has a bag fill window, that has an unclear relationship to the bag itself. We'll have to see how it works over time.
