1.0 out of 5 stars BURNS YOUR CARPET
This vacuum is only three months old when I tried to vacume up a small area of dirt in the middle of my living room. What I saw as the vacuum passed over the area is a brown streak. I didn't know what it was at first. It wouldn't clean up even with detergent and hand scrubbing. I called a carpet cleaning company in and they said it was a burn! I then took the vacuum...

JUST RECEIVED MY NEW HOOVER TEMPO AND IN TWO MINUTES ASSEMBLED THE FEW PARTS NEEDED TO PUT IT TOGETHER. IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.

AS FOR THE WAY IT WORKS - WELL IT'S TERRIFIC. MY OTHER, OLD HOOVER ELITE SURPREME WAS VERY GOOD BUT AFTER TWO DAYS WORTH OF USE, THIS SEEMS MUCH BETTER. THE HEADLIGHT FOR ONE THING IS MUCH BRIGHTER AND THROWS LIGHT IN A MUCH WIDER ARC. YOU COULD ACTUALLY VACUUM IN THE DARK BECAUSE THERE'S SO MUCH LIGHT GIVEN. AS FOR PERFORMANCE - I'M VERY IMPRESSED. WE HAVE A RUG IN THE DINING ROOM THAT AFTER CLEANING WITH ONE OF THOSE SUPERMARKET RENTALS LOOKED AND FELT AWFUL. NO NAP, AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH I VACUUMED NEVER LOOKED RIGHT. NOW, WITH THE TEMPO, AFTER JUST ONE VACUUMING, IT'S MUCH BRIGHTER AND ACTUALLY SOFTER.AS FOR OVERALL CLEANING,IT'S REALLY VERY GOOD.

WHAT I LIKE IS THAT THE ON/OFF SWITCH IS ON THE TOP AS OPPOSED TO THE SIDE AND ALTHOUGH THE HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT IS LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM, IT'S EASY TO USE AND MOVES WHEN YOU MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT. ON MY OLD HOOVER, IT WAS DIFFICULT TO PUSH IT TO WHERE I WANTED IT TO BE. IF I HAD ONE CRITICISM IT WOULD BE THE CORD. IT'S PLENTY LONG WHICH I LOVE, BUT WRAPPING IT UP AROUND THE MACHINE IS A BIT AWKWARD. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT IF IT WAS RETRACTABLE, BUT IN REALITY THIS IS NO BIG DEAL. ONE OF THE THINGS I LIKE BEST IS THE HOSE. FORMERLY TO USE THE ELITE SUPREME'S HOSE, I HAD TO INSERT IT INTO A PORT IN THE BASE,AND IT WAS ALWAYS SUCH A HASSLE THAT I HATED USING IT. I WOUND UP USING A HAND HELD VAC MOST OF THE TIME. IT NEVER WENT IN SMOOTHLY AND WAS A HUGE PAIN IN THE NECK. HOWEVER THE TEMPO'S HOSE IS ALREADY INSERTED SO IF YOU WANT TO USE THE CREVICE TOOL, YOU PULL OUT THE HOSE, AND VOILA, YOU JUST ATTACH IT. MOREOVER, WHEN I WENT TO LOOK (BEFORE BUYING) AT THIS MODEL, THE DEALER WANTED $100.00 PLUS TAX. BECAUSE WE HAD A $30.00 PROMOTIONAL CREDIT, ALL WE PAID ON AMAZON WAS $55.00 - NO TAX AND NO SHIPPING. AM I A GREAT SHOPPER OR WHAT? IT ISN'T WHISPER QUIET, BUT I DON'T INTEND TO VACUUM AT 3AM SO IT SHOULDN'T DISTURB MY NEIGHBORS.

I'M NOT A PERSON TO BE IMPRESSED WITH HOW MUCH THINGS COST. MORE EXPENSIVE DOESN'T MEAN BETTER. THE MORE BUTTONS AND GIZMOS ON SOMETHING, THE MORE THINGS THERE ARE TO BREAK DOWN. I LIKE SIMPLE AND EFFICIENT AND IF THE TEMPO CONTINUES TO PERFORM AS WELL DOWN THE ROAD AS IT DOES NOW, I'LL BE VERY PLEASED, AND QUITE TRUTHFULLY SURPRISED. MY MOM'S ELECTROLUX IS PRETTY OLD AND BACK WHEN IT WAS MFG'D WAS MADE TO LAST. I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT TODAY, APPLIANCES, ALTHOUGH MORE STYLISH AND "PRETTY", AREN'T MADE IN THE SAME WAY, OR WITH THE IDEA THAT THEY SHOULD WORK WELL FOR MANY YEARS. WE'RE A "DISPOSABLE" SOCIETY AND I BELIEVE MFGS. HAVE ADOPTED THIS ATTITUDE AND ARE ONLY GIVING US WHAT WE SAY WE WANT. WE WANT NEW - WE DON'T WANT TO STICK WITH THE SAME OLD THING, EVEN THOUGH THEY STILL WORK WELL. BUT I DIGRESS.

SO OVERALL, TWO DAYS INTO USING MY TEMPO, I LOVE IT. IT'S SO EASY TO PUSH THAT IT ALMOST FEELS AS THOUGH IT'S SELF-PROPELLED, CLEANS REALLY WELL, HAS A GREAT PURPLE/BLUE COLOR AND I LOVE THE WAY THE TOOLS FIT EASILY AND CLEVERLY INTO THEIR OWN LITTLE SPACES, AND STAY THERE. ALL IN ALL A WONDERFUL MACHINE FOR A GREAT PRICE, EVEN AT $85.00

KUDOS TO AMAZON FOR REALLY QUICK DELIVERY. THIS WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE DELIVERED UNTIL 2/21 AT THE EARLIEST AND IT ARRIVED 3 DAYS AGO, 2/15. THANKS!!

3-18-05 UPDATE. I'M HAPPY TO SAY THAT THIS MACHINE HAS MET AND EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS. THE PERMANENTLY ATTACHED HOSE IS SUCH A GREAT FEATURE AND I'VE USED IT MORE IN ONE MONTH THEN IN ALL THE YEARS I HAD MY OTHER HOOVER. I'VE BEEN ABLE TO REACH PLACES I REALLY COULDN'T BEFORE, SUCH AS BEHIND THE VERY, VERY, HEAVY BED. THE SUCTION IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC AND PICKS UP DIRT ABSURDLY EASILY. HAD A LITTLE GLITCH LAST WEEK WHEN THE BELT POPPED OFF. I HAD NEVER REPLACED A BELT BEFORE ON ANY MACHINE AND WAS A TRIFLE UNSURE OF HOW TO DO IT. HOWEVER THE INSTRUCTIONS WERE CLEAR. I DIDN'T NEED A NEW BELT, JUST HAD TO PUT THE BELT BACK ON IT'S TRACK. I HAVE SCIATICA AND WHEN I WOULD VACUUM WITH MY OLD MACHINE, WITHOUT FAIL WOULD GET A VERY BAD ATTACK. THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN ANYMORE. THIS VACUUM ALMOST PUSHES ITSELF. I NEVER HAVE BOTHERED TO WRITE REVIEWS, BUT THIS IS SO WORTHWHILE THAT I WANT TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE WITH THOSE OF YOU WHO NEED A VACUUM BUT DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE BUYING. I CAN'T IMAGINE THAT A REALLY EXPENSIVE MACHINE, SUCH AS A DYSON, COULD DO A BETTER JOB THAN THIS DOES. WITHOUT HAVING TRIED ONE I SUPPOSE I SHOULDN'T MAKE THAT STATEMENT BUT IN MY ESTIMATION THIS IS ALL AND MORE THAN ANYONE COULD NEED. HOPE THAT THIS HAS BEEN HELPFUL TO YOU.

UPDATE 8/1/05 Working great. Had to replace the belt, which was inexpensive but a little tough personally for me to do since it requires a bit of strength to stretch the belt onto and around the pieces. Still, I did it. The suction is awesome and the built in hose is the best feature. I love this vacuum and highly recommend it - it's terrific and a great value.

FEB 2006 - Well, we're just shy of one year and this Hoover is still going strong and just as great to use now as the first day.

I had at one time considered buying a bagless vacuum for the convenience, but after thinking it through, decided it would be messy. Now, I've been reading comments that this is the case -trying to empty the dirt without it all going back into the air

is an exercise in futility. So, although I don't think Amazon is selling this particular model any more, if you can find one similar to it and you need a new, inexpensive and powerful vacuum, this is certainly to be considered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, April 25, 2005
This review is from: Hoover U5146-900 Bagged Tempo Upright Vacuum with Allergen Filtration (Kitchen)
The Hoover Tempo is a wonderful vacuum. It does a great job of cleaning the carpets and all the dust is contained in a bag. I bought this vacuum to replace a EuroPro bagless vacuum. It is so nice not to mess with filters and empting dust canisters that spill more dust into the air and floor. I will never go bagless again. This Hoover is inexpensive and does a wonderful job. Yeah! for Hoover! Yeah! for vacuums with bags!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Vacuum for a Great Price, June 16, 2005
This review is from: Hoover U5146-900 Bagged Tempo Upright Vacuum with Allergen Filtration (Kitchen)
I love this Vacuum. I needed to replace my old hoover that I had for 8 years. I considered getting one of the more expensive models, but decided more expensive is not always better. This vacuum proves to me that more expensive is definitly not always better. It by far outcleans my old hoover which was more expensive but it was just 7.2 amps and this is 12 amps. I have changed the bag in it about 4 maybe 5 times already, and have owned it for 2.5 monthes. I do have a long-haired cat and dog and they both shed, one pass over the hair with this vacuum and poof the hair is gone.

I really like the on board cleaning tool because it is already hooked up, my old hoover had a slot you had to hook the hose into, it is so much easier to just whip the hose off its hook and get into those small crevices. Although sometimes I do wish the hose was a little longer but then again it would probably just get in the way.

Another thing I really like about this vacuum is that it is fairly light and has a handle which makes it very easy to carry up the stairs, and you know how important this can be when you need to vacuum every other day like me (with pets).

Be careful this thing will suck up your throw rugs in a minute, you have be careful with this because the vacuum will have a horrible smell, so make sure you adjust the carpet height or it may ruin a rug.

I would reccomend the Tempo to anyone who wants a great vacuum, and heck even if it only lasts a couple years I only paid $55.00 for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Before you buy a "Bagless" Vac...., July 14, 2005

consider a few things. They market them as "easy" to empty the cannister. Easy? Is having to take the vacuum OUTSIDE to remove the cannister, dumping the cannister into a plastic bag to AVOID the MASSIVE cloud of DUST created while emptying the cylinder easy? If opened inside your home, the SAME dust you sucked out gets redeposited from the dust-cloud-fallout. If you, your children or pets have allergies....forget it. Now, about this vac. It has FILTERED air discharged while it's running. It TRAPS the dust and debris in a bag that is easily removed, kept sealed and disposed of....all without the EXTRA hassle of taking precautions to avoid a massive dust cloud. Ours replaced a 13 year-old Hoover upright that served us well but was worn out. It is VERY strong and easily maneuvered. It was easy to assemble and took only a few minutes to do so. But, be forewarned....buy it QUICK! It's only a matter of time before the sweeping tide of "bagless vacs" relegates bagged vacs to the museum, all in the name of "convenience". I beg to differ. This is a great vacuum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good & inexpensive product, October 3, 2005
This review is from: Hoover U5146-900 Bagged Tempo Upright Vacuum with Allergen Filtration (Kitchen)
I bought this vacumn for my daughter last Christmas. Budjet was limited and I reviewed Comsumer report picks. She loves it. I have a two-story house and lugging my $299 Windtunnel up and down the steps was a real pain. And I like it better! I bought this vacumn for one-floor use. It's great. It has the 12 amps of my Windtunnel but is narrow and gets into smaller spaces, Tools are easier to grab and is light to use. Had a hard time finding it again on Amazon. Searched several times before success. It was worth the wait.

1.0 out of 5 stars BURNS YOUR CARPET, September 18, 2005

This vacuum is only three months old when I tried to vacume up a small area of dirt in the middle of my living room. What I saw as the vacuum passed over the area is a brown streak. I didn't know what it was at first. It wouldn't clean up even with detergent and hand scrubbing. I called a carpet cleaning company in and they said it was a burn! I then took the vacuum to service and they said the motor over-heated (BURNING MY CARPET IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LIVING ROOM!!). I now have to get the carpet replaced. This vacuum apparently has the same over-heating flaw that the closely related Hoover model "U5150-900 Tempo Upright Bagless Vacuum" has. Check out the Amazon reviews of that one. I will never buy a Hoover product again!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad Belt Technology, December 6, 2008
This review is from: Hoover U5146-900 Bagged Tempo Upright Vacuum with Allergen Filtration (Kitchen)
Well, I bought the Hoover Tempo after its good reviews from Consumer Reports. After returning the first to Best Buy, and running into the same problem with the second vacuum, it must be said that the belt for the Hoover Tempo is particularly sensitive. With other vacuums, getting something stuck in the brush roller is evident, you turn off the machine, and you pull it out. With the Hoover Tempo, you barely get that opportunity before the belt has snapped. In short, this vacuum is for everyday pickup and really doesn't work well for whole-house medium-duty work, i.e. with smaller objects like rubber bands that might be on the carpet. It helps to clean what is already essentially clean and, if I had it to do over again, I'd keep shopping.
