4.0 out of 5 stars This thing SUCKS!
Very nice vaccuum, great features, and it'll suck the chrome of a trailer hitch. The extended hose is a nice option - it'll stretch a good 20 feet or more. The handle-mounted on-off switch is very convenient. Only downside that i can figure is cleaning the non-bag canister can be messy and dusty - but what vaccuum really overcomes this anyway?

2.0 out of 5 stars Too dirty
I bought this because it was highest rated by Good Housekeeping.
I should have went to Walmart and bought something cheaper. I have had problems with it clogging up with normal use. It is very messy to empty. The filter while effective when vacuuming, emptying it sends all the dust back into the air and it still looks dirty. It does pick up good but has to be...

4.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but leaves your carpet squeaky clean, August 13, 2005
This review is from: Hoover U8145-900 Savvy Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
Our house is mostly carpeted, we own a dog who sheds copiously in the summer, and our two older Dirt Devil and Eureka vacuum cleaners were note picking up enough dog hair. After reading product reviews, I thought I'd try this as I don't like the nesting wands on Eureka models (although had read rave reviews of the Eureka 487).

Pros:
This will pick up dirt you didn't know you had. After vacuuming my house with my older vacuums, I redid the carpets with the Savvy. I emptied two canisters of fur and dust. The smart pass system was nice and did go off everywhere our dog prefers to sleep--indicating a high hair count. The on board tools are easy to use and easily accessible. The bag/bagless option is nice, although I've only used the bagless so far. We found the item on sale with rebates for $199.00. Definitely worth it at that price.

Cons:
It is heavy and if you have back problems or need to carry this between floors, you may want to reconsider or keep your older vacuum on the lesser used floor. The suction makes this somewhat laborious to move around; again, someone who is older or has back problems may want a self-propelled model. The canister can be tricky to take out, but it doesn't create a huge mess to empty as some have said. You simply upend it in the trash and go. It's certainly no messier than any bag system I used where dust was released when I took a bag out. The hose is a bit too short for my taste as I like to use the hose for bare floor cleaning instead of the bare floor setting on an upright.

I should have went to Walmart and bought something cheaper. I have had problems with it clogging up with normal use. It is very messy to empty. The filter while effective when vacuuming, emptying it sends all the dust back into the air and it still looks dirty. It does pick up good but has to be emptied very frequently or it loses suction. I have to empty after every room and I don't live in large house. I am looking to replace this expensive mistake.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lifetime belt lasted one week, January 1, 2006
By
This review is from: Hoover U8145-900 Savvy Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I bought this vacuum a couple weeks ago and took it back for a refund. The third time I used it it started making an awful noise. After I checked it out, I found that quite a few of the "teeth" on the lifetime belt were missing. I decided that I would keep the vaccuum because it really does do a great job of cleaning the carpet. However, when I went to get a new belt for it, I couldn't find one. I looked in the owner's manual and they don't list a belt replacement. Just said to go to an authorized dealer and have it repaired. I live 100 miles from the closest dealer and decided that it just wasn't worth it. With the exception of the broked lifetime belt, it is a great vacuum. I was amazed how much dirt it picked up after I vacuumed with my Bissel and then went back and vaccuumed with the Savvy. So, great vacuum. poor lifetime belt.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warranty Service, December 11, 2005
This review is from: Hoover U8145-900 Savvy Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I purchased this vacuum just under a year ago. After about 2 months a wire in the motor went bad and we took it in for repair. It was repaired on a timely basis by the authorized dealer. About 4 months later, a plastic part on the housing broke that holds the handle upright. It has been in the shop for 3 months with the parts on back order.

I contacted Hoover's customer service and they were of little help in trying to assist with the back ordered parts.

In terms of cleaning this vacuum does a nice job but their warranty service is very slow.

2.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING!, August 5, 2005
This review is from: Hoover U8145-900 Savvy Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I ordered this vacuum because it was highest recommended by the Good Housekeeping Institute. Although expensive, I figured it was worth the investment. What a disappointment! It is extremely heavy to manouvre on carpets, although it picks-up well on them. It is hopeless at picking-up on hard-wood floors... I have reverted to a dustpan and brush! The second time I used this vacuum, the holder that supports the extension wands broke off, which meant it could no longer store the tools. Although Hoover supplied a replacement part, this did not fit and had to be modified by my husband. Overall verdict? Save your money and buy cheaper!

I brought this baby home and did it ever clean up! Quiet, powerful, great features! That said, DON'T BUY ONE OF THESE UNITS!
I have had this into the shop three times in as many months on the first one and the replacement lasted for three vacumings... Defective drive unit. The brush quits spinning and you have to return it to service center. In my case thats a 52 mile trip! I have made that trip 6 times and am on my way again today!
Beware this unit!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great vacuum!, August 18, 2005
This review is from: Hoover U8145-900 Savvy Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I recently purchased a Fantom canister vac. that died after 2 months of use! I was so disgusted I took it back where I bought it and bought the Hoover Savvy. My husband has really bad allergies so the bagless/bagged HEPA filtration option was really appealing. We just had new carpet installed when the other one broke so when I got the Savvy home I immediatly cleaned the carpet. Almost instantly it sucked up a full canister of new carpet fuzz still on the carpet after the installers cleaned it! I was so impressed with how well it cleaned the carpet. I've never had a vacuum clean the carpet this well. I've only had it a few weeks and I hope it holds up well. If it doesn't I'm confident that Hoover will make good on their warrenty.

1.0 out of 5 stars My Last Hoover, August 21, 2006
This review is from: Hoover U8145-900 Savvy Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I bought the Hoover Savvy two years ago after reading the review of it in Consumer Reports. After 6 months, it needed a new motor. After one year, the self-propel feature stopped working. Currently, the three-way power and carpet/bare floor switch has a short, and the suction has drastically reduced. The quality and durability of this Hoover Savvy is not what I would have hoped, especially for the $300 + price tag I paid back then.

Despite it's mechanical and electrical failures, this vacuum does have a few positives. The on-board attachments are conveniently arranged at the top of the vacuum. The rotating brush hand tool is a nice accessory for stairs, but beware the notion that this is a "power" tool. The only power is the suction provided by the vacuum, and the brush's rotation is easily stopped when you press the tool down onto the carpet even just slightly.

The accessory hose is very short, making use of the accessories awkward. When you pull even slightly to stretch the hose and move an accessory tool around, the entire vacuum cleaner either rolls with it, or tips over if you're reaching sideways.

Edge cleaning is good, as is its performance on bare floors. The electric cord is conveniently long, and wraps neatly on the back of the vacuum.

This vacuum is very heavy, and carrying it up and down the stairs is cumbersome. There are no convenient places to hold on to the vacuum when transporting it up and down stairs. The wide width of the Savvy is nice when using on the floor, but makes it difficult to balance on a standard stair step.

The suction power of the Savvy was acceptable for the first year, but has significantly reduced. It still does ok on bare floors, but does a poor job of cleaning carpeted floors. I vacuumed a carpeted area thoroughly with the Hoover. (The area hadn't been vacuumed for about 3 days). It picked up a few dog hairs and little bit of dust. I then went over the same area with a Dyson DC14. WOW! It picked up 15 times more dog hair and dust than the Hoover did, and on an area that was supposedly already cleaned with the Hoover!

Overall, the quality, reliability, and performance of this Hoover is not acceptable, and I would not recommend this vacuum cleaner.

1.0 out of 5 stars HOOVER DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE, May 21, 2006
This review is from: Hoover U8145-900 Savvy Upright Vacuum (Kitchen)
I have always owned a hoover. I purchased a Dyson but returned it as it was too clumsy. Decided to go with Hoover again. What a mistake.

Everything is made of plastic. One of the cups that the hose slides through so it is held in place on the machine broke. As it is under warranty for another month, I called the repair shop and told them what had happened. Their response was: Bring it in, if it is a manufacturing defect, we will replace it, otherwise we will not. Great, prove that it is a manufacturing defect when the entire machine is a piece of junk. I have new carpeting and fuzz has lodged itself under the front cover. I have removed all the screws and cannot get that front cover off in order to remove the fuzz. I may have to eat this damn machine but am going to look at the Sears which I am told is made out of old fashioned metal and does a fabulous job.
