Awful! Don't buy!,
This review is from: Hop on Pop Book & CD (Dr. Seuss) (Paperback)
Awful, awful, awful! I would have given it zero stars, but that wasn't an option. The book is read MUCH TOO FAST for a child to follow along and turn the pages. The page turn signal is a tiny bell that is hard to hear and so short it gives no time to separate the pages and turn them. By the time a child gets the page turned, the reader is 4 or 5 pages ahead because they are also reading SO FAST! This could have been a really good book for an audio read along because the print is large and the words are simple and rhyming, but it is read so quickly a child just learning to read doesn't even have the chance to determine which word is being read. My 4 year old loves read along books but became so frustrated with this book he didn't want to ever read it again. Extremely disappointing as a parent and discouraging for a beginning reader. The Curious George read along series is so much better, although it doesn't have the large text or simple words. Curious George is read with interesting inflections and gives children sufficient time to follow along and turn the pages themselves. Save your money and don't buy this Dr. Seuss series.

My Baby Can Read!,
This review is from: Hop on Pop Book & CD (Dr. Seuss) (Paperback)
This book and CD combo taught my child to read. Or at the very least, it gave her a really great start at word recognition. She would listen to the CD in the car while holding the book when she was 2 (almost 3) years old, and she loved looking at the pictures and turning the pages with the audio cues. Before long (I'd say about 2 months) she was reciting the lyrics, so naturally I thought she had memorized the CD. I took the book and pointed out words at random, and I was so surprised when she read each one! Then I went out and bought all the other Dr. Seuss book/CD combo packs, and some others like "Dora the Explorer" and Disney ones (Nemo, Bambi, Cinderella).
I feel that the narration is neither too fast nor too slow, and never thought the page-turn cues were unclear, but I do agree that once the cue is sounded, you really have to be fast so you don't miss the beginning of the next page. And the story plays twice (the second time, it is read straight through with no page-turning cues) so having to hear the story two or more times can drive a parent bonkers. Also, the plastic case it comes in is useless - you'll have to find a way to store the CD so your child doesn't mangle it. My daughter is now in the Gifted & Talented program at school and almost always gets 100% on her spelling tests. She always gets high scores on standardized tests and is reading at the 5th grade level (she's in 2nd grade). I'm not saying "Hop on Pop" had anything to do with this because I have no way of figuring out why she's the smart one and her sister is the cute one. But whenever I see the commercial on TV for the "Your Baby Can Read" DVDs, I have to laugh. That might work, but this is so much cheaper!
