Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Businesswoman Alison Hope, having set up shop and residence in Little Hopford, England, promptly becomes the chief suspect in the murder of her partner in this lively debut mystery. The victim, a roue who had recently deserted his family, had attempted to extort money from Hope, learns investigating officer Detective Inspector Trevellyan, who becomes smitten with a beautiful and volatile young woman. As other suspects turn up, among them an IRA assassin, a penny-dreadful journalist, and a bookie with a penchant for brutalizing gamblers, Trevellyan believes he'll find the killer and reach romantic bliss. Unhappily, another slaying, for which Hope has motive and opportunity, forestalls his plans. Blinded by love, Trevellyan overlooks the most obvious suspect, making himself and Hope targets for murder. Kelly creates a spicy plot with strong characters and an old-fashioned love affair in this first of a projected series.

From Library Journal

Also already known as a writer in England, Kelly now tries her hand at traditional village mystery, introducing detective Nick Trevellyan and friend Alison Hope. Rural Hop Valley plays host to a small group of well-drawn characters, most of whom gather at Hope's open house only to find themselves suspect in the bludgeon murder of Hope's cousin late that night. As Trevellyan probes into alibis and motives, he becomes increasingly involved with the independent and attractive Alison. This is a pleasant diversion and a promise of more good things to come.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Puns Intended, June 8, 2008
This review is from: Hope Against Hope (Paperback)
Pleasant police procedural cum village look-into. There's the home-grown university-educated policeman, the computer-savy computer-entroprenur red-haired woman come to the family holding, a party, a corpse/a riffled room, the customary usual suspects. A series, but read this first to know the set-up. Worth your time.

3.0 out of 5 stars I hoped for something more!, August 21, 2004
The title of this book originates with the murder at the center of this mystery novel. Aidan Hope is found bludgeoned to death by a heavy glass ashtray in his bed and breakfast room. His cousin, and former partner in a software firm, Alison Hope, is accused of the murder. (Thus, Hope vs. Hope).

One of the fun things with the book is that it is set in England and is full of British-isms, such as the phrase "Sod you!" which must be about the same as "Screw you!" The mystery itself is not too bad, but the editing job was at times heavy-handed. At times, there is almost an excess of detail. But, at others, it feels like entire scenes have been cut to shorten the book. A smaller font would have been much more preferable to butchering the text.

My final grade is "3 stars", mostly due to poor editing and my irritation at it.
