5.0 out of 5 stars Can't get emough!
I have read all of the Brides of Lancaster and wish there were more in this series. I felt like I was right there in Lancaster with these characters. I want to cry with the characters when something bad happens or something good happens to them. I love the wholesome feeling these stories give me. I love the amish and cannot wait until Wanda comes out with another book...

3.0 out of 5 stars predictable read
After reading the Amish series by Beverly Lewis, I was excited to find a new series on the Amish culture. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this particular book. The story of Rachel Beachy and Silas Swartley is simplistic in its style and predictable. While the central conflict is good, the story churns slowly around its characters and seems to be a better fit...

I recommend that you read all of the Brides of Lancaster County series and the Daughters of Lancaster County series. Wanda Brunstetter brings the simple and peaceful way of the Amish to life in her books. A must read for the Amish lover at heart!

After reading the Amish series by Beverly Lewis, I was excited to find a new series on the Amish culture. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this particular book. The story of Rachel Beachy and Silas Swartley is simplistic in its style and predictable. While the central conflict is good, the story churns slowly around its characters and seems to be a better fit for a younger reader. What is most disappointing is its ending, which centers around the death of a young family member. This turn of events is treated superficially and takes away from the emotion of how a loving family would react in such a situation.
Perhaps other books in this series are better, and I am anxious to read another to see. I would not suggest this as an introduction to the series.

This was a very welcomed book to my wife's book collection, she enjoys the stories of these early day ladies, and she is very happy with this book and the others of it's series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Christian story but Amish beliefs misrepresentated, April 7, 2010
I have enjoyed the series "Brides of Lancaster County." However, Brunsetter has overlooked the beliefs of the strick Amish as if she does not understand their true shunning.

Amish shun a member who has left the faith for the "fancy" world. They do this to keep their community "pure" in their beliefs. When one daughter runs away to marry her husband who wants to go "fancy," the family has put their daughter under the shunning. This story is almost preachy in that it keeps bringing up forgiveness and how the family should forgive their daughter and welcome her back into the family. This DOES NOT happen in real Amish families unless the person goes through a period of repentance and agrees to rejoin the church.

The story does touch on the difficulties Amish young adults have during their "courting" where two women may want to court the same man.

If you want to enjoy an inspirational uplifting book, you will be pleased, but don't expect to learn the honest life of the Amish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of The Series, January 11, 2010
This review is from: The Hope Chest (Brides of Lancaster County, Book 4) (Paperback)
I enjoyed The Hope Chest by Wanda E. Brunstetter about an Amish family whose eldest daughter left the faith to marry an Amish man who chose to leave the Amish community because he liked the modern things. An Amish man wanted to court her but she kept putting him off and encouraged him to court her younger sister instead who she felt was a better match for him. Her younger sister, Rachel, actually did hope to marry him some day.

Of the three books in the "Brides of Lancaster" series, I liked this one best. There was the romance story line but also the story line about shunning the oldest daughter who married outside the community, leaving her Amish lifestyle behind. It wasn't as depressing as the others and I liked the main characters better in this one too. It's a light, quick read.
