I am a minister that does counseling with individuals struggling with a variety of issues including eating disorders.
Over and over again I find that the issues that Dr. Jantz address in this book are common among those I counsel. Especially the area of unforgiveness. I am convinced that unforgiveness is the #1 root of much mental illness, addictions, and emotional instability. I really appreciate Dr. Jantz's whole-person approach to the treating of eating disorders. Too many times counselors and treatment facilities only deal with changing behavior and ignore the other areas of a person's life. Based upon my experience, unless all areas of a person's life is addressed they will not experience long term recovery. Reading teh book you come to understand that Dr. Jantz is interested in more than a person having victory over eating disorders-his goal is for them to become a whole person in all areas of their life.

This book gave me hope and has started to Heal my wounds from the past. The questions written in the book that you ask yourself are tough and do bring up painful memories. However, this is how you begin to heal and learn to forgive so that you can be set free from Anger, Unforgiveness and Shame and guilt. You do what you do to cope for a reason and a way of escape. I praise God that he has blessed me with this book. I pray it blesses you too.

As a woman of God, I looked to this book for hope and faith that one day I'll overcome my eating disorder. I am currently 2 years into recovery from EDNOS.
However, although this book isn't as bad as "the best little girl in the world," I was not pleased. I felt like it was going no where. I didn't really get any answers at all. The continuous repetitive thoughts going through my mind basically read "okay, but... I already knew that... what's next?"

A Must Read!,

This review is from: Hope, Help, and Healing for Eating Disorders: A New Approach to Treating Anorexia, Bulimia, and Overeating (Paperback)
This book is a must read for anyone who has been touched by eating disorders! Dr. Jantz walks the reader through the pain and issues, always from a loving, compassionate- and relevant - Christian approach. The reader is guided to greater tools of healing and recovery through this book; the journal and "workbook" aspects of it alone, shine a much needed light of God's love and truth to the individual and to the disorder. It is a must read for those afflicted in any way, as well as for those within the field of eating disorder treatment and recovery!

This was a real help for me to deal with my own eating disorder. I really had to push myself to keep reading it, but in the end, it really was worth it. It helped me not just see how bad my problem is, but also evaluate WHY it is has such a strong hold on me and my life.
I'd definitely recommend this to anyone struggling with eating disorders.

No Help for me,
This review is from: Hope, Help, and Healing for Eating Disorders: A New Approach to Treating Anorexia, Bulimia, and Overeating (Paperback)
As a social worker I thought this book would be more about how to help people who are dealing with eating disorders. However, it was more of a self help book. I do not have an eating disorder so I felt the book was not really directed for me. However, I am an emotional eater. The book made me take a look at how and why I eat. The book was not written really great although it did make some good points. The book had "homework" for people which made be helpful for some of my clients who are struggling with an eating disorder. Not a horrible book just not for me.

Working through eating issues from a spiritual aspect,
This review is from: Hope, Help, and Healing for Eating Disorders: A New Approach to Treating Anorexia, Bulimia, and Overeating (Kindle Edition)
Due to my procrastination nature, it took me more than a month to get around to reading this book. It sat by my chair, and I would pick it up from time to time and leaf through it. It's not a quick sit-down-and-read-it-through book. It's the kind of book you want to read slowly, with pen and paper nearby, taking notes, leaving bookmarks, maybe even writing on the front cover with permanent marker: "turn to page ___ when you feel like going on a junk food binge!"
The book deals with a lot of serious issues, helping the reader to get to the reason why she turns to (or away from) food. I like that way that the issues are addressed from a spiritual standpoint, giving Bible verses throughout the chapters, and ending each chapter with a "Spiritual View" discussion that helps the reader to focus on the issue from a Biblical standpoint. This book isn't a quick fix for disordered eating, but it is a valuable tool. If you read it slowly and prayerfully and do the "homework" in each chapter, it can help you break free from destructive habits.

What's Eating You?,
By
This review is from: Hope, Help, and Healing for Eating Disorders: A New Approach to Treating Anorexia, Bulimia, and Overeating (Paperback)
Certain foods are linked to specific moods.
Sad? Ice Cream and Cookies. Happy? Pizza or Steak Bored? Potato Chips Sometimes, we use food to mask feelings of anger, fear and guilt. Many people in our congregations, struggling with this complex issue, find themselves in a destructive cycle of emotional overeating and binge eating. Unlike other addictions, one cannot just abstain. An alcoholic achieves sobriety by staying completely away from booze. The recovering drug addict stays away from drugs -- but a person suffering from disordered eating cannot simply stay away from food. We must reimagine our relationship with food, so it is our fuel rather than our focus. In other words: eating to live rather than living to eat. Hope, Help & Healing for Eating Disorders, by Dr. Gregory L. Jantz, is a helpful resource for pastors, counselors and friends of those struggling with food issues, and is a good tool for someone to begin the journey towards emotional healing. "Food is meant to be your ally, meant to strengthen and sustain you;," notes Dr. Jantz, "it was never meant to be your enemy, your lover, your friend, or whatever you substitute it for." This insightful guide explores the emotional, relational and spiritual aspects of eating, and uses thoughtful questions to help the reader navigate the maze of painful experiences, tangled relationships, and conflicted feelings. A word of caution. People battling with such issues as anorexia and bulimia will not be "fixed" by merely handing them a copy of this book, although it addresses both. Used in conjunction with appropriate counseling, it is an outstanding source of hope and encouragement for those seeking help. |
