This review is from: HOPE FOR NEWBORNS (Paperback)
On receiving my copy of Hope for Newborns, I was initially disheartened. I had purchased the book because the cover illustration shows the same doily that my beloved Nan use to use in her nightclub routine...turns out that the doily design on Mr Glass' book is SLIGHTLY different to Nan's. Despite this dispiriting setback, I opened the book and was confronted by words. Gladdened by this, I read-on.
Hope for Newborns concerns a Manchester terrorist organisation who operate out of a butchers shop. They can only sell meat to old men who are having their hair cut. This is due to an EU directive which bans depressed people from feeding fish. There's also a gay son who enjoys sweeping-up broken glass. I mean, I skim-read a little, but that's the main gist of the narrative. Is it any good? I like to think of it a the premier doily-artwork--displaying fiction in my collection. If that sounds as though I am damning it with faint praise, I beg to differ - this book changed my life. Forever. I'll explain... On page 89 you'll find the following quote; "...rent a rabbit hutch. Dig a hole in the ground and climb into it at night". NEVER MIND THE CONTEXT. I took it as a voice from above and have been living the life of a human in the daytime and at nights I am the rabbit. I AM THE RABBIT. Things have been a lot better since I've been the rabbit. Simpler. More honest. I feel more connected to the earth. And, thanks to Mr Glass, I understand a little more about the mindset of feminist hairdressers. Actually, don't think too much about that aspect - I don't want to give too much away. You should read this book. Maybe this Sunday afternoon. |
