A true lifesaver ..., September 26, 2011
This review is from: New Hope for People with Alzheimer's and Their Caregivers: Your Friendly, Authoritative Guide to the Latest in Traditional and Complementary Solutions (Paperback)
This book really helped demystify dementia and Alzheimers. It was extremely helpful in explaining that the loved one is incapable of foreseeing the consequences of their behaviors. It explains and displays what is actually happening with the brain. It also helps the caregiver deal with emotions associated with taking care of the loved one such as anger, guilt, depression and fear. There is a chapter on communicating with health care professionals, deciding on nursing homes, in-home care, dealing with delusions, and much more. This book was a lifesaver. Within the first half hour of reading, a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. So many questions were answered and many options provided.

I have not read this book, but find it misleading that Amazon has labeled the Kindle edition with a 2011 publication date when the book itself was published in 2002. Customers should realize that ebook publication dates are not meaningful indicators of currency. For a health-related topic, I would not want to rely on a ten-year-old book, no matter how well written. Buyer beware!

misleading regarding mercury's impact, November 7, 2002
This review is from: New Hope for People with Alzheimer's and Their Caregivers: Your Friendly, Authoritative Guide to the Latest in Traditional and Complementary Solutions (Paperback)
The book has some extremely helpful information, but is dangerous because it "clears" mercury as a contributor to Alzheimers Disease. I had already read Snowden's "Aging with Grace: The Nuns Study" which Shimer uses as documentation to clear mercury. I have also read Boyd Haley's work linking mercury with Alzheimer's. Since Haley and Snowden are both working at University of Kentucky in Lexington, this is confusing and contradictory.
If Haley is right, think of all the people who wrongly feel "secure" that their amalgams (silver fillings & crowns) are "No problem". This is in addition to mercury (labeled thimerosal) as a preservative in many vaccinations. This for a substance that EPT would fine for disposing of a small amount in a lake or burying in our yards. But it is safe in our mouths? I hardly see how!
Adding to Haley's credibility (and decreasing Snowden's and Shimer's) this week (Nov.2002) FDA finally classified mercury as Class III--unsafe for routine use.
Read: Tom Warren's 1991 "Beating Alzheimers" (and a new book to be out soon). In "Beating Prostate in 90 Days", Larry Clapp states that our health can be no better than our mouths. (Our Mental health can be no better than our Dental health.)
It is time for lobbying/politics to be dethroned from deciding what is good for our health. Mainstream medicine claims to rely on scientific findings. LET IT BE SO! (Instead of the American Dental Association trying to DElicense dentists who talk against mercury.)
With the aging population and anticipated increase in Alzheimers Disease, TRUTH is a must if only from a financial standpoint to society. But, as tremendous as the dollar cost of Alzheimers is, the greater cost is in human life and suffering. Let no one give us a false sense of safety by hiding the TRUTH!
