Trailer Bride Is a Thing With Reverb, April 10, 2004
This review is from: Hope Is a Thing With Feathers (Audio CD)
Trailer Bride is a special band, one with a unique sound that makes it difficult to draw comparisons with others. They do favour reverb laced songs - this being the link with Neko Case's Blacklisted CD. There the comparison ends - where Neko has a powerhouse voice Melissa Swingle's is a much more modest but well used) instrument, a laidback voice that refuses to hurry.
Shiloh, a shimmering instrumental, is the best piece of music on this CD. Skinny White Girl, with it's alternating tempos and switches from emphasis on reverb drenched guitar to exciting swaths of slide, is another favorite. It's a skinny white girl's version of the devil at the crossroads deal. And Destiny is the best of their inimitable slow creeping songs on this collection.
The music is the aural equivalent of homemade cookies. Trailer Bride isn't a band of expert musicians, but rather a group with more modest talents but imbued with musical imagination and a go for it attitude. Instead of perfectly formed supermarket cookies you get these wonderful smelling, somewhat misshapen, handmade treats. Just for you. Made by the ghostly matron of some long forgotten household to give you shivers of delight as you swallow.
There are some songs that aren't to my taste, like opener Silk Hope Road, and not all the others are unabashed successes. If you like Neko Case's Blacklisted or Lucinda Williams's World Without Tears there's a good chance you'll like Trailer Bride and Hope Is A Thing With Feathers is the place to start.

If you like Lucinda Williams, you'll love Trailer Bride. This album will make you shiver and leave you feeling pleasantly warpy and mildly disturbed. Edgy.

This is Melissa Swingles darkest work..yet you want to hear it again and again hopeing the pain will go away.Throw the Nora Jones away and get real with Melissa. Love sucks, it may or maynot be worth the risk.

Fab music - the best of all worlds. Songs with a sence of tongue in cheek so rarerely found west of the UK, and a dircet approac so rarely found north of elsewhere.
