5.0 out of 5 stars the album is great, but the live show is even better
There is no band like My Friend Steve. From the gut wrenching "carflips" to the heart tugging "all in all", this cd takes you on a ride through all of your emotions. This is the major label release of one of the best to emerge out of orlando since Seven Mary Three, whom Steve gives great thanks to. If you have a chance to see them live, I highly...

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Average CD. Not as good as I thought it would be.
I'm really into alot of newer groups that almost nobody knows. Like Far too Jones, Tonic, The Nixons, The Gufs, ect. I heard Charmed on the radio and loved it. I thought this group would be another to add to my collection of favorites. But it really isn't that great of a cd. It has a couple of good songs. But overall I was a bit disappointed with this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmmmm . . ., March 26, 2000
This review is from: Hope & Wait (Audio CD)
As someone with an almost compulsive need to "categorize" every band she listens to, I spent rather too long trying to liken MFS to someone else -- and came up with nothing! At first, they struck me as Barenaked Ladies trying desperately to be 'serious'. And as terrible as that descriptiuon makes them sound, I feel it's the most truthful. 'Backwards and Sideways', for instance, could be easily mistaken for a Born On A Pirate Ship-era BNL song, but the majority of the tracks are a lot more mellow. This is the perfect background music, with each song being laid-back without being depressing. A definite grower of an album, although unfortunately few of the songs grew on me to the point of finding myself suddenly exclaiming, "god, I love this song!" 'Carflips', however, would be the exception; it is the most beautifully crafted song, and literally left me with tears in my eyes. All in all, buy this CD, but leave an open mind :)

Oh, and if you happened to read the review likening My Friend Steve to Matchbox Twenty, I'd advise you disregard it! I am an avid MB20 fan, and while I love this album, I can't think of 2 bands more disimilar!

This is the major label release of one of the best to emerge out of orlando since Seven Mary Three, whom Steve gives great thanks to. If you have a chance to see them live, I highly recommend you taking that chance. The first time I saw Steve perform, he reminded me of Dave Matthews, he played and sang his heart out, there wasnt any jumping around and dancing around. But dont let that mean the show isnt great, to hear the lyrics live and in person, they hit you right in the heart. You feel the music with My Friend Steve, cd and live.

To anyone looking for the independent release of My Friend Steve's "Honey Bear", I can help you get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous CD all the way through, May 3, 2000

I had never heard of this band until browsing through Amazon.com after looking up the Train CD. It is honestly one of my favorite CD's in my collection and all of my friends love it. I just wish that I knew how to see a live show since no one in Texas has really heard of them, yet. I think they are incredible and have a distinct future. I would recommend this CD to anyone, especially if you like mellow yet meaningful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very strong debut, January 6, 2000
This review is from: Hope & Wait (Audio CD)
From start to finish, this album is solid. So many things make this cd great. Music, vocals, lyrics; all strong. The production is great too. Each song holds a story, each different, both musically & in their meanings. You won't be sorry. If you like MB20, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Chalf Farm, Cool For August, & any other band in this realm, you will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope and Wait, December 26, 1999

Hope and Wait, the second album from Orlando group My Friend Steve, is a CD anyone can listen to the whole way through. Some songs, like Charmed and Day Begun, are upbeat and energetic while others, like Chandaliers, the Schooling, and Carflips show Steve's softer, more sentimental side. The lyrics to almost all of the songs are poetic and easy to sing along with. All in all, Hope and Wait is an album almost anyone can enjoy. I am looking forward to their next album and am still trying to get my hands on a copy of their first!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope&Wait is pure brilliance, May 6, 1999

My Friend Steve is yet another fantastic band to break out of Central Florida (is it something in the water?)! Steve Burry's songwriting is brilliance, and his voice is unique and soothing. I bought this CD ages ago, and from the moment I slipped the disc into its player, it's been a favorite of mine. As someone involved in the music industry, I keep ontop of new bands - and MFS is one of the best bands I've ever heard! If you dig Matchbox 20, Far Too Jones, Marvelous 3, The Gufs, etc - then you'll fall hard for My Friend Steve. Don't waste time sitting here reading these reviews!!! Go out and get the CD yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why this wasn't bigger I'll never know, January 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hope & Wait (Audio CD)
CD recorded in Maurice LA. Saw this band in 1998 at Shanahan's in Lafayette LA with maybe 100 people (generously) also there. They were fantastic live and completely hooked me. Prior to the show I'd only heard the song Charmed. All in All (Victoria) is probably my favorite song on the CD. This CD is loaded with great songs and I can only believe that they were too soft for Modern Rock in 1998 and too southern or alt-country sounding for AAA radio.

5.0 out of 5 stars ~, August 26, 2009
This review is from: Hope & Wait (Audio CD)
I have no idea how I got this cd, but I've been listening to it now for about a year and it just keeps getting better and better. Some amazing songs: All in All, Chandeliers, Car Flips ... all just tremendous songs! I simply can't believe these guys made ONE album ... and that it was THIS good ... and then released nothing else!? I mean, how the hell does that happen? I think they could have been the next REM ... truly, this guy is a great songwriter and singer. Great emotions in the music.

5.0 out of 5 stars buy it if you can find it, January 16, 2004
This review is from: Hope & Wait (Audio CD)
To bad they only cut one album, the opening track makes this cd worth every penny, plus its listenable all the way through. I've had it for a few years now and it still gets into the rotation, you just cant get sick of it. Also a great cd for some background music, it always gets a "what is this, I want it" type respnse from someone.
