I'm a 18 years old trumpetstudent, and I love the trumpetconcerto. It's (what I think) the most beutiful music ever been written. The concert is ordered by David Hickman, who also are the performer. He has a very nice and warm sound in his trumpet. The other pieces on this CD are also very beatiful, so if you like nice, warm, beatiful and relaxing music, buy this CD!

This album is simply a wonderful treat. I was moved to tears the first time that I heard "Through the Lions' Gate" (in a live outdoor performance) - especially "The Mountains", and have thoroughly enjoyed listening to it on many occasions since. I highly recommend this and have given it as a gift to special friends.

I admit to having a penchant for the less familiar, and I often end up purchasing discs of composers I have barely heard of. Often, the music is mediocre or slightly interesting, but sometimes I really do find some real gems.

And sometimes I end up with things like `Hope's Journey' with music by Michael Conway Baker.

It is hard to remain tactful when reviewing something like this, but the short story would be that Conway Baker has got nothing to say, and completely lacks the means to say it. There isn't a whiff of talent, nor of skill, present in the music of this CD. The trumpet concerto is an utterly inane work - it verges on the edge of banality, but Baker's music is so devoid of anything resembling quality or skill that even `banality' seems to be a wrong choice of words. It is supposed to be traditional, diatonic, harmonious music, but the tunes are easily the most stupid and boring one's I've ever heard. No finesse, no orchestrating ability, nothing. In the feeble attempt at mock baroque music in the third movement, for instance, it is just painfully obvious that Baker simply doesn't know how to put two notes together. And the other works are no better - in fact, `Through the Lion's Gate' is, if possible, worse; it' quite possibly the most feeble, vapid sequence of sounds I've ever heard - the sounds from the construction site outside my apartment right now included.

It's hard to understand how a record label could lack the judgment and common sense that would have prevented a CD like this from ever seeing the light of day. One could even reasonably ask whether record companies don't have any kind of moral responsibility for preventing talentless kooks from making fools of themselves in public like this. The players sound uninspired, even though I assume they do their best. Sound quality is OK, I guess. It doesn't really matter. This is really a disaster.
