About the Author
Robert Boissiere, born in Paris, France, came to the United States after World War II. A member of the French army, he was imprisoned in a Nazi prison camp from which he managed to escape and join a group of Basques in the Pyrenees. After moving to California, Boissiere found himself on an artistic and spiritual pilgrimage to the Hopi villages. There he was adopted by a Hopi family and became a participant in their cultural life. The Hopi Way is based on his experiences living as a Hopi. He is also the author of Po Pai Mo, also from Sunstone Press.

No way to learn about the Hopi,

I have read dozens of books on the Hopi Indians as well as visited the reservation and spoken with locals. I have read several books by this author and found them a waste of ink. He lived with the Hopi but completely missed what he was looking at and though immersed in their culture failed to recognize the essence of a culturally rich people. His 'observations' reduce them to a primitive stature and he appears to mask a smug, European air of superiority while writing condescendingly under the guise of being 'one of them'.If one wishes to learn about and understand the Hopi people I suggest the books by Frank Waters, Harold Courlander or Jesse Fewkes. Even the research performed by H.R.Voth has more incite than this book, and Voth set out to destroy the Hopi religion once he had documented it. Albert Yava's book "Big Falling Snow" is a much better way to understand later events in Hopi history and he was a firsthand witness and participant. Anyone can write and publish a book, but not everyone should.
