Visually Gripping Living Book About the Dust Bowl,
This review is from: Hoping for Rain: The Dust Bowl Adventures of Patty and Earl Buckler (I Am American) (Paperback)
This book is one of my favorite history titles from Winter Promise American Story 2. Another one I loved and reviewed is Black Frontiers: A History of African American Heroes in the Old West. Hoping for Rain is a wonderful living book, packed with facts about the Dust Bowl in its concise 40 pages. The story is about the Bucklers, a fictional but representative family in Oklahoma, trying to survive the Great Depression. The story is told through narrative text and through diary entries and letters/postcards written by the characters. Interspersed throughout the book are photographs, maps, and posters from the era. These visual elements are just as important as the story in conveying the history of the Dust Bowl.
There is a glossary with eight words at the end of the book. The inside front cover gives a few discussion questions, ideas for further research, and a few websites. |
