3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, could be implemented better
This little device sounded perfect when I read about it. The problem is that it is made to be as cheap as possible. The plunger tip is just molded plastic, so it tends to leak and is also hard to pull/push. If this product were made "right" the plunger tip would be rubberized or have an o-ring seal around it, like all decent syringes. Great idea. Poorly...

The Hopkins MixMizer is an all plastic graduated syringe that provides 2 cycle oil measurements, provided by Hopkins, for 1 pint fuel/oil ratio's of 16:1, 25:1 32:1, 40:1, 50:1 and 100:1 it also provides 1 quart, ˝ Liter and 1 Liter fuel/oil mix ratio's for 25:1 32:1, 40:1, 50:1 and 100:1. For larger volumes of fuel you just increase the number of times you fill the syringe with oil, It also provides ˝, 1, 1-1/2 and 2 oz measurements and 0 to 60 cc measurements in 2 cc increments. It takes very little practice to get consistent measurements if you use standard syringe filling procedures.

I did note that the black marks on the syringe provided by Hopkins tend to provide a slightly oil rich fuel / oil mix. My thoughts on 2 stroke engines is that it's better to error a little rich on oil than lean since I would rather foul a spark plug than seize an engine.

The plastic hose, nozzle extension, is handy to get towards the bottom of 1 quart oil bottles but it is not long enough to get to the bottom of larger oil containers. After using the syringe to extract oil from the bottle, with the nozzle on, I remove the extension to avoid an oil rich mix before injecting the oil into the fuel container. I have found that the MixMizer is a lot less messy than using a graduated cylinder or trying to use a measuring spoon since you are able to force almost all of the oil from the syringe. I noted that a few cc's of oil are retained in the tip of the syringe. Most of this residual oil can be expelled back into the oil bottle by cycling the syringe a few times. The only things that it doesn't come with are a cap to keep the nozzle clean and a zip lock bag to store it in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guarantees Fresh Fuel Mix, November 30, 2009

This review is from: Hopkins 10111/6 MFG 2-Cycle Oil-Mixing Tool (Lawn & Patio)
This mixing tool always guarantees a fresh mix of fuel for your tools with two stroke engines. I've owned one for several years. Before I bought this mixing tool, I would make 1 gallon of fuel mix at a time and it would usually sit around in the can for months until it could all be used. The markings on the cylinder make it simple to get the correct mix very quickly and consistently and allows you to mix quantities from a 1/2 pint to probably a gallon. I make a pint of fuel mix in a 1 qt plastic measuring cup using fresh gasoline whenever I need it. A pint is usually good for 1 1/2 - 2 fills of my blower vac, string trimmer or chain saw, all of which require a 50:1 mix, which is typically what I need for the amount of work I have whenever I use a tool. Yes, it may take a little more time to mix a small amount of fuel whenever it is needed rather than mixing a gallon at one time but I know the fuel will always be fresh and provide the best performance. Also, there is one less gas can taking up space in my garage. This is a really convenient and inexpensive tool that you'll probably appreciate a little more every time you use it.

It's nice to be able to measure the mixing oil as the individual bottles are a larger size that what is needed to mix with a gallon of gas.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality, October 25, 2011

Per the description, this item is ALL plastic. There is no rubber tip to the plunger as on typical syringes. This makes moving the plunger very difficult when loading the chamber requiring a lot of force. This force also makes it more likely to spill when the plunger suddenly decides to move freely nearer the top and completely comes out as you fill the chamber. Also two of the four I had broke the pull ring after about half a dozen uses. I won't buy these again.

...on product description page under "Product Features":
Plastic construction; 15.8-ounces

No, it is not 15.8 ounces -- it's only 2. So for mixing 5 gallons at 50:1 (12.8 oz) I'd have to measure seven times. No good. The advertised capacity of 15.8 oz was the only reason I bought it. Very disappointing.

UPD: Product description has been changed to read "2 ounces". Too late for me though.

I've always fretted about stale oil/gas mixtures for my occasional use of my chain saw and after messing with a measured shot glass for the oil this little gem is great. Works as advertised. Note that this only measures the oil...you then discharge it into a small container with the proper amount of gas and you're good to go.

Handy to use for those small tanks where you don't want to add oil to a large gas can. Now you can mix by the Quart or ounces

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Fuel in Small Quantities, April 27, 2011
By
This review is from: Hopkins 10111/6 MFG 2-Cycle Oil-Mixing Tool (Lawn & Patio)
This works great if you only need a small quantity of 2-cycle fuel.

Since all 2 stroke engines seem to use different mixtures, this is perfect for homeowners who mix fuel for seldom used engines (Chain Saws, etc.). Many homeowners don't even use a gallon of fuel in a season, leading to wasted gas and money $$$$$!

Accuracy is obtained if... you follow the directions on the back of the package (cardboard). Hang on to the packaging for this information, add a few staples to one side & the top and it then works as a holder for the tool, keeping everything in one place (very convenient).

Use it with a 1 cup measuring cup to mix very small quantities of fuel. It worked great in my small engines class for multiple engines (all different mixtures) that may or may not have been fixable (no one wanted to waste an entire gallon on a bad engine!).
