Sweating the Boards,
By
This review is from: The Johns Hopkins Internal Medicine Board Review 2008-2009: with Online Exam Simulation, 2e (Johns Hopkins Internal Medical Board Review) (Paperback)
I got First Aid for the Internal Medicine Boards along with the John Hopkin's Internal Medicine Board Review, because I saw that both had pretty good ratings. I looked at several topics in both and found the John Hopkin's to be a little more in depth and easier to get through (better charts, pictures, etc.). I'll probably go over some of the most difficult diseases in both texts. Though Ferri's Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient is really for residents on the wards, it has always been one of my favorite books since I was a medical student/ resident and it works as a great refresher for the boards that you can carry anywhere with you. The other books are bulky and heavy.

Advantages-
1) Bulleted text lets you get through a lot of material efficiently. 2) There is enough detail in each section to prepare you for the test 3) The pictures are pretty good 4) The online review questions are great! I was hitting them on a daily basis- at home, during lunch in my office, and even between patients. (I used an old Macintosh laptop and had no problems accessing them). 5) The online test simulation gives you more information and helps with timing. When I took the ABIM MOC test my time management was perfect. Disadvantages- 1) Bulleted text is rather "dry". Great for reviewing topics and identifying weaknesses. Doesn't make for engaging reading. 2) The book is surprisingly heavy! Difficult to read in bed. I passed my test using this as my main review source. I would recommend it to a colleague. Good luck!

I was board-certified in Internal Medicine in 1978. I have taken numerous internal medicine review courses and board review courses since then. The Harvard Intensive Review of Medicine courses, MKSAP reviews, and ACP-sponsored seminars were all superb. But this is the best course I've taken. The presentations are consistently well organized, well paced, and interesting.

I bought this book but didn't get a chance to read it before the ABIM exam. However, I was able do to about 1/5 of the questions from the online simulation. I thought the online simulation was helpful. The format is a little awkward and nothing like the actual exam, but I distinctly remember a few questions on the actual exam that were very similar to questions from the simulation. I have to credit the online simulation with getting me at least 2 extra questions right on the ABIM.

I like this book and to be honest I complement my studies with Swanson's Family Medicine and Step-Up Medicine. Reviewing from the 3 books I feel that I get better information and reinforce my knowledge. I strongly recommend the 3 of them, and if you learn looking images and ordered items, this book is for you.

Book itself from what i have heard is excellent, but warehousedeals service was crappy to say the least, the code for web access for the multiple choice questions inside the book had already been used up by people at warehouse deals, I had to return the book and request refund
