Eighteen years into the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta finds a Devanian soldier named Maxites flung into the catastrophic events of war and destiny. Hoplite: Torch of Prometheus is a historical fiction novel taking place in Greece nearly two and a half millennia ago. Torch of Prometheus begins in 413 B.C. Maxites is a twenty-year old warrior of the fictional town of Devanum, sworn allegiance to the Athenian League, and is eager to join the war between an advanced Athens and bloodthirsty Sparta. Devanum is able to send out a small force of men to aid the Athenians, led by Maxites' oldest brother Dioxiphos. In a string of bloody battles, conversations with the gods, an untimely marriage, journeys on land and voyages by sea, Maxites must learn to deal with bonds forged and severed, what the difference is between Athenians and Spartans, the truth of his past, and the loss of those he loves.
Michael Pritsos is a twenty-two year old English Major currently living in Phoenix, Arizona. Hoplite is his first published title although he is currently at work constructing several others, including the sequel to Hoplite entitled Warlord. His next release, expected in early 2010, is a fictional novella concerning the conflict in Darfur entitled When Elephants Fight.
This book is extraordinarily written, with detail but not so much that you find yourself daydreaming out of boredom. The character development is extensive and intriguing, with several given perspectives and insight. The plot thickens throughout the novel and keeps each type of reader interested with action, historical accuracy, and romance. Though not a regular reader of historical fiction, I found this book to be refreshing and exciting, words I normally wouldn't use to describe such a genre. The author has a novel way of lacing dialogue and insight into the book, the style is excellent and the product overall very satisfying. I look forward to new books in the future and would highly recommend this selection.

Written with great detail, each character, place, and event is superbly developed. Staying true to his Greek heritage, the writer did a phenomenal job of interweaving historical accuracy into a work of fiction. Rich with words full of emotion, the writer created an epic story that is undeniably believable, leaving this reader wanting more at the end.
