3.0 out of 5 stars Good for a quick bore cleaning at the range
This is not a substitute for powder/lead/copper solvent, patches, a bore brush and elbow grease but it's a quick way to do a fair cleaning at the range. There's nothing magical about the Bore Snakes. They will remove loose particles from the bore and, maybe, loosen some of the carbon from an afternoon of shooting. But a really dirty gun will take more than a few swipes...

If you own a fire arm, you need a bore snake. These work amazingly fast & well. Cuts cleaning time in half. This makes cleaning your barrel a breeze.

Very quick and easy. I always take this with me in my range bag. Even if you don't brake down your gun for cleaning, a few pulls through with a Bore Snake and your pistol barrel will be clean and shooting right on target.

Don't know how I cleaned my pistol(s) before buying this. Makes cleaning the barrel and cylinders of my revolver a breeze. I've since bought another one for my .45 auto. This accessory belongs in everyone's range bag or cleaning kit!

I love these bore snakes, I have one for my 9mm pistol and my rifle. You can use it as a quick cleaning tool or use it as part of a thorough cleaning. When I'm doing a thorough cleaning I:

1. Use a brush with solvent to scrub the barrel
2. Spray brake cleaner to remove the solvent
3. Use the snake to make sure its clean and give the inside of the barrel a uniform coating of oil.
4. If the snake comes out dirty I repeat the process till its clean

This is a great cleaning tool!

4.0 out of 5 stars Customer picture is misleading, beware!!!, October 13, 2011

If you think you're getting a liquid cleaner with the rope, this is not the case. All you get is the rope, you have to buy the actual solvent separate. That's the only reason I'm giving 4 stars, amazon should delete the misleading pictures.

4.0 out of 5 stars A necessary tool, but could be better, July 19, 2011

The bore snake is an essential part of a cleaning kit, but it's not the perfect tool. I bought my first bore snake 15 years ago from a manufacturer that I assume has been bought out by Hoppe's. My most recent bore snake testifies to the old refrain: they don't make them like the used to.

The brass bristles are no longer made to be adequate for giving the barrel a good scrubbing. (You will still need a brass cleaning rod.) The new model bore snake is too stretchy; it lengthens (and narrows) when pulled through the bore so it doesn't have a tight fit like the old bore snake. It's still very effective, and I would rather pull the snake through for a few more passes than labor with patches.

My recent purchase was for 2 snakes of the same caliber: one for rifle, the other for pistol. The obvious difference would be the length of the lead string. (There is no use having a 3-foot lead on a snake that will be used for a pistol.) But the snake labeled for pistol has the same extra-long lead as the rifle snake. The colors are different, but that is all. So save yourself the second expense; order a rifle snake and understand that it is one-size-fits-all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy, fast, and effective, January 24, 2012

If you started cleaning guns when the rule was to scrub the barrel back and forth with a bronze brush on a long cleaning rod, loaded with Hoppes #9, followed by pushing dry cotton patches down the barrel until they came out dry, you may be skeptical that you can get results just as good with one pass down the barrel with this gadget. But this is not just a quick, field expedient cleaning method- although it's a great addition to your field kit. It combines all the traditional cleaning tools into one simple tool. At one end is a non-scratching soft brass weight that is dropped through the barrel from the breech end. Behind the weight is a length of narrow rope, followed by a wider section with a brass brush built into it. After the brush is wide, soft section designed to absorb any liquid, powder and lead loosened up by the solvent and brush.

This is a really simple, well-designed cleaning system that works just as well as the traditional methods in a fraction of the time. Spray your barrel with your favorite cleaner, drop the brass weight down the barrel, and pull the snake through. That's it. (It won't remove heavy leading in one pass, but if you have heavy leading you're either loading too hot or waiting too long between cleanings!) I was convinced when I found out that bullseye target shooters- a very picky lot- swear by the barrel snake. I've got versions in .22, .38, and 20 gauge. If you tend to put off cleaning after a day in the field or the range because it's just too time consuming, you need a BoreSnake. It makes cleaning so easy that you won't be tempted to put your gun away with a dirty bore any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the fastest methods for cleaning your gun after shooting, December 7, 2011

Background

I am a Navy Veteran, and have extensive experience shooting and cleaning pistols and rifles since my days in ROTC (Reserve Officer Training). I used to use a conventional cleaning kit with brushes, patches, rags and various guiderods.

One day, I asked what the Boresnake was designed for. I was told that it cleans the bore of the pistols and chambers of revolvers rather quickly.

I grabbed some for various calibers that I own, and gave it a test. Applying Hopps Cleaner to the leading end, I placed the weighted portion down the barrel and pulled the cleaner through the bore of a Beretta PX4. I repeated it 3 times and after inspection, I realized that it did a great job in cleaning the bore of the pistols. I tried it with a Colt Python 357 Magnum revolver with excellent results, also. As long as the cleaner holds up, this will do an excellent job in cleaning your firearms. I'm a firm believer in cleaning your sidearm after use to ensure reliability and accuracy at all times.

The BoreSnake consists of a weighted string followed by a nylon cord, followed by bore bristles and a thicker nylon cord. Multiple passes are equivalent to using a bore cleaning brush followed by using a bore cleaning swab, then using a small pad to dry the bore. This is truly a time-saving evolution for the avid shooter. This replaces the tedious task of interchanging the various components of a conventional cleaning kit and takes a fraction of the time.

These days, I store the various BoreSnakes in my range bag and clean my guns immediately after use.

This is a must have! Two thumbs up!
