About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, June 13, 2005

This elliptical is a great starter-level machine to have in your home gym. It's nice & solid, built out of sturdy parts. It's heavy (150 pounds), meaning it won't rock back and forth much as you exercise (I'm 6'5, 210 and it hardly moves). Best of all, it came with decent directions and only took maybe 30 minutes to put together. Time and again when I was researching ellipticals I came across reviews stating how hard xyz machine was to put together; that's not the case with this one.

I have a couple minor annoyances with the machine. 1) The display is rotated slightly off center, I think due to poor craftmanship of my particular unit rather than design. 2) There doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the loud beep that sounds every time the machine changes workout levels. On some workouts, that's every 20 seconds! Admittedly I haven't combed through the manual to see if there's a hidden way to mute the thing, but there's no obvious way at least. Kind of amusing considering the two stickers on the unit that say "Speakers not included on this model".

All said and done, I'm very happy with my purchase & I think that the e52 will help keep my wife and I in shape for some time to come. Oh btw, Amazon had it to me inside of a week of ordering it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some headache getting it but a GOOD machine, September 10, 2005

I don't know what had happend to this order. Usually Amazon is good with their shipping; however I odered this machine on the 24 of Aug. and recieved it on the 8th of Sep..

The assembly came with some problem, the main shaft was bent and it did not allow me to place the mast inside, so I resorted to a hammer and pliers. After that everything was a breeze (it also helps if you have your own tools, it would make it a lot faster than those provided).

When I finally got onto the machine, it was GREAT. I'm used to using a Precor machine at the gym, and this does not stand up to it; but for a home gym at a resonable price I'm definately glad I bought this. I have it on a level floor (that helps a lot) so it does not "wobble", the resistance is great, NEEDS a water bottle holder, few but effective programs, and it's quiet.

I would recommend this to someone.

It's no Precore, but considering the price, this elliptical is probably one of the best values out there. It's got the features that really matter (quiet, smooth operation, 20 resistance levels, heart-rate monitor, calorie counter, etc.) and none of the gimmicks (like a fan or speakers). It took about an hour to assemble, and has performed great. If you're looking in the under-$1,000 range for a good elliptical, you can't wrong with the Horizon E-52.
