About the Author

John Garrett was born and raised in and around Victoria, British Columbia and moved to the Fraser Valley at age 17. Naturally creative and full of energy, John has always enjoyed the adrenaline rush of a busy kitchen.

After his first restaurant job at 15, John knew restaurant work was in his future. He attended the British Columbia Institute of Technology for courses in cooking theory as an apprentice chef. Now head chef at Horizons Restaurant in Burnaby, John is renowned for his alderwood-style cooking. In 1993, he won the Vancouver Salon Culinaire gold medal in the professional plates category. He garnered an honourable mention and People's Choice award in the professional plates category in the 1993 Victoria Salon Culinaire.

When John is not in the kitchen, he loves to ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, hike with his golden retriever Anna, play guitar, and spend time with his family. John lives with his wife Pauline and their three children, Jordan, Connor, and Daniel.
