5.0 out of 5 stars High Expectations Satisfied
On hearing that a new Gerry Beckley CD was in the works, I immediately got my expectations up. Often, when expectations are high, the end product turns out to disappoint. Not so here. The more I listen to this fine work, the more I am enchanted by it. If you're familiar with Beckley's works in the group America or as a solo artist, you know that musically and...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Welcome Release From A Pop Music Veteran
Beckley's second solo outing never achieves the pop peak of Van Go Gan's "Goodbye Highway and Kiss of Life" but it's overall a more consistent affair. The opening instrumental "3AM" and it's reprise, harken back to America's helcyon days (Holiday's "Miniature")and show Gerry can still write a great melody which was always his strength. But he can also occasionally match...

On hearing that a new Gerry Beckley CD was in the works, I immediately got my expectations up. Often, when expectations are high, the end product turns out to disappoint. Not so here. The more I listen to this fine work, the more I am enchanted by it. If you're familiar with Beckley's works in the group America or as a solo artist, you know that musically and lyrically, his genius comes through in so many ways. This CD is no exception.

This collection is filled with outstanding tracks. Warm Gone Gray is a perky, charming number. Love & Leaving and Somewhere Somehow are two lovely, melodic, individually outstanding ballads that stay with you all day. Saturday Sky is a delightful uptempo tune that gets the heart pumping. Lazurus is an energetic tune you just have to turn up loud. The Farmer Is The Man is a fascinating revision of the traditional folk song, done in fine, folksy style. I could write on and on about the fantastic tunes on this CD. Highly recommended!

GERRY BECKLEY of the group AMERICA has released a solo set of songs, 15 total. GERRY has written such classic gems as SISTER GOLDEN HAIR, I NEED YOU, DAISY JANE, MOVING TRAIN, PLAYING GOD, NOW SUE & SARAH among hundreds. The songs here are quite splendid.? GERRY touches upon many subjects & uses a variety of musical instruments to get his message across. His genius is readily apparent in such cuts as WARM GONE GRAY, SATURDAY SKY, THE FARMER IS THE MAN. He continues to produce songs that are pleasing melodically, musically & lyrically to everyday folks. His wide expanse of subject matter & musical wizardry combine to bring magical sounds of peace & love. His messages are clear, his feelings are real. Please give this one a close listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, April 20, 2006
This review is from: Horizontal Fall (Audio CD)
Fans of Beckley will not be disappointed with this latest solo effort. Beginning with the instrumental "3a.m." which is heartbreaking in it's simplicity, the cd moves into some solid ballads which one would expect from the man who wrote "I need you" and Daisy Jane" The rocker "Lazarus" is a treat, HUGE drum sound provided by TWO drummers - Ryland Steen of Reel Big Fish and John Fields (Switchfoot, among others). Mimi Parker of Low appears on the last track, a beautiful ballad entitled "Somewhere, Somehow"
BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gerry Beckley is Amazing with Horizontal Fall, December 6, 2006

Gerry Beckley is "timeless". His new CD is awesome and seems to go back to his roots. His songs over the years last lifetimes and bring back amazing memories. This new CD just proves he hasnt lost his touch. Anyone who does not agree, doesnt know the real Gerry. I have had the privilege to meet him and talk with him many times, including being able to celebrate New Years eve with them after a concert with the rest of America and their families. He is one of the nicest people i have ever met, and his songs have always been a part of my life. I hope there are still many more CD's still to come and look forward to seeing him again in the near future in concert and afterwards.

A very philosophically mature Gerry Beckley comes full circle and lands smoothly in "Horizontal Fall". Sumptuous melodies meshed with delicious acoustics and veracious lyrics give this masterpiece a secure place in any library or on any ipod playlist. Songs like "Crying", "I'll Be Gone", "Warm Gone Gray" or "Here & Now" all have a distinct "America" flavor. The up and coming CD from America to be released in January of 07' will include "Love & Leaving" which is also included on this solo performance. Very impressive!!! Do not miss this Oh-- so nice CD!!!

Usual genius by Gerry. I love this album, with 3am and 'with me always' standing out in my mind, bnut everything is amazing on here. Oh and check out 'lazarus' too!
This album is in Gerry's usual style. Melodic, soft ballads on acoustic guitar and/or piano. Simply unpretentious, beautiful music.

The new solo CD of Gerry Beckley of the America, is a rarely jewel of Lyrics. All the songs are winners. I've listened to Horizontal Fall all the way through more than I have any other CD in years. Every tune is beautifully crafted. The sound is pristine. Imagine the Beatles, Beach Boys and America tossed into a blender with a touch of Stephen Bishop. Add a heaping tablespoon of melancholy. The result is the Horizontal Fall smoothie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gerry Beckley, Horizontal Fall, February 15, 2007

Like Wow!! Bright and Fresh but with That unmistakable G.B. Vocal. I haven't heard The New America Album yet, but this Record, could easily Pass as The Best America Album since "Hearts". From start to finish the Landscape of songs is Pure Magic. In todays age of disposable and poor rehashed releases, it is A real pleasure to buy a Record where every song is worthy. There's no filler here. While it's unmistakably The Guy from America, G.B. has no fear here to try different sounds and musical textures that makes this Record New and Special. There are some big name guests contributing on this record including Son Matthew B, but having seen America Live I suspect most of the musical magic here comes from the hands of G.B., not unlike Emitt Rhodes or Paul McCartney in his finer moments. This is not a Hard Rock record, But if you like Melody, Sensitive Vocals and Something to Play for Pleasure, This Is It.
Can't wait for The Next One G.B. Thankyou. Pete Dacy, Melbourne, Oz.
