This mailbox is made of very heavy gauge metal, not flimsy like cheaper ones usually carried by the chain stores. Overall superb construction. The lid hinges operate smoothly and silently, and are made to last. There is a forced patina on this piece. Aged copper is a better description than antique brass. You won't receive a bright shiny finish ... more like an old penny. This was exactly what I was looking for so I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to wait for it to age for years myself!

Update: 5 years later this mailbox still looks as good as the day I got it. It was a great purchase! [9/29/11]

Arrived with lots of rust.

I don't entirely mind the rust on the back of the mailbox, or on the bottom of the mailbox, because those surfaces aren't visible unless you're looking really hard. But when the INSIDE of this thing is covered in blotches of blue rust, I have to draw the line. I don't want to have to wash my hands every time I reach inside to get my mail.

As another reviewer mentioned, the color isn't the orangy brass of the picture -- it looks a lot more copper-colored. Although, in my case, it's copper-colored with hints of blue peeking out at every seam.

Am returning the mailbox. Very disappointed.

This mailbox was perfect for my needs. I needed one large enough to handle all the junk mail and catalogs I get. The mailman had no trouble stuffing all my mail into this one. I had it on a covered porch and it held up well.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this product. Heavy gauge material with quality construction. As good if not better than the competition at twice the price.

The mailbox was heaver grade than the one at the home centers, attractive with very good build quality.
