5.0 out of 5 stars Great Start for a Mexican Meal
The Hormel Beef Tamales are are an old standby on the pantry shelf. They are not highly spiced, in fact they are on the bland side. They work great as a foil for refried beans, cheese, chipotle, salsa, sour cream, you name it. Check out this ingredient list: "Water, Beef, Tomatoes (Water, Tomato Paste), Corn Meal, Corn Flour, Masa Harina, Salt, Chili Powder (Chili...

2.0 out of 5 stars so-so
if the 5star rating is as a bell curve, and 3 = average; then these are a 2, just below average. in grading systems around a c minus.

they are not bad, but then they are not good either. hormel is not a mexcan food company and must consider the masses they sell to. this product is geared for the masses, bland on the mexican taste side of cuisine...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Start for a Mexican Meal, April 1, 2010

The Hormel Beef Tamales are are an old standby on the pantry shelf. They are not highly spiced, in fact they are on the bland side. They work great as a foil for refried beans, cheese, chipotle, salsa, sour cream, you name it. Check out this ingredient list: "Water, Beef, Tomatoes (Water, Tomato Paste), Corn Meal, Corn Flour, Masa Harina, Salt, Chili Powder (Chili Peppers, Flavoring), Modified Food Starch, Paprika, Spice." For a meal in a can, this is an outstanding lineup of stuff. No chemicals, additives or preservatives. Truth is, aside from a little fat and salt, these are not that unhealthy or high in calories. So enjoy.

When I was a child my mother would very infrequently buy a can or two to serve as a special treat because the whole family enjoyed them. I have an emotional association with the product, and still love them. These are great when added to no-bean chili, served over rice or potatoes, or as a side dish served with other more nutritional fresh foods. I let them simmer in a covered pan until the masa coating is soft before removing the paper wrappers. The sauce can create more servings when added to other ingredients and I am experimenting with more recipes that include the tamales. When on sale or through Amazon, Hormel tamales are a fairly inexpensive way to serve a fast meal and add variety to menus.

Nothing like a real tamales in a corn shuck made at home, but then again this is the spam of tamales so it does have a purpose in life!

From price and taste, these tamales are better than the 'other' brand that is packaged in a glass jar. This is a better value. A good tasing, quick meal. Add some good hard crust bread and you leave the table satisfied. I espeicially like that AMAZON offers 12 cans... good value... good service.

Delicious. Remove paper before heating & cover with sliced cheddar cheese. Your mouth will love you. Combined with another purchase and took advantage of super saver shipping.

whole case of tamales, cheaper that store price, tasty but what they call chili I call water with grease. Drain and add your own chili top with cheese serve on bed of lettuse and supper is ready.

I keep these in my pantry at all times. They make a great quick lunch. Also, they make a great supper when time is short, just unwrap put in baking sheet and cover with cheese, bake at 350 until cheese is melted. Cheaper here on Amazon then at my local grocery store.

... served over black beans with a spicy salsa and cheese. Healthier than the pint of Hagen Daz or the trip through the local drive-thru. The more things I have on hand to whip up a filling meal the less the temptation for fast food outside the home. The downside - it was pretty light on the Chili Sauce though.

They do seem less greasy than I remembered which is a plus. Not too much like a "real" tamale but good for a quick lunch or camping trip.
