A Nirvana Collectors' Item, December 22, 2004
This EP originally was released in Austrailia in early 1992 and later released in Japan (as noted in With the Lights Out boxed set). I bought this in 1994 after the death of Kurt Cobain for 30 dollars and I've always treasured it because it is rarer than the albums and commericial singles. The music itself is good. "Even in His Youth" IS NOT included on With the Lights Out and is only available on the Smells Like Teen Spirit single. Four songs were covers recorded for the BBC ("Turnaround", "D-7", "Son of a Gun" and "Molly's Lips"). Except for "D-7" the other three appear on Incesticide but D-7 is available in the With the Lights Out boxed set. The other two tracks were unreleased on albums. "Aneurysm" appears on incesticide but this version only appears on With the Lights Out and Smells Like Teen Spirt single. The Japanese version includes text in Japanese and a black and white photo. The design is very similar to Nevermind except with more yellow in the water. Basically, with the release of With the Lights Out and Incesticide, the only reason to get this is for an otherwise unattainable version of "Even in His Youth." This is only for major collectors of Nirvana. I'd would give it a 5 as a die-hard Nirvana fan but because it's pricey for its length and 80% of the material is available elsewhere I must give it a 4.

Hormoaning the facts:, October 1, 2005
Hormoaning is an EP (not an album). It was released in Australia and Japan only, about 30,000 copies in each of those two countries. Anyway at the time it kicked ass! rare Nirvana songs. Although that version of 'Aneurysm' and 'Even In His Youth' were both already available as b-sides on the 'Smells Like Teen Spirit single'(a better version of Aneurysm can be found on the Incesticide album). The song 'D7' was also already available as a b-side on the 'Lithium' single. The songs 'Turnaround', 'Son Of A Gun' and 'Molly's Lips' were released shortly after 'Hormaoning' on the 'Incesticide' album. As it is, it is a nice little collection of some of the great, less well known Nirvana songs. As it was only a limited edition release it is hard to find a real copy that is not fake, but its a good collectors item. The songs arn't rare, they were all available on other releases by the end of 1992 anyway.

A stellar EP from Nirvana!, September 22, 2003
This EP was originally released in Japan in early '92 (to coincide with Nirvana's then-current tour there) and contains six brief blasts of pre-Nevermind punk fury. In fact, this EP, more than any other Nirvana release, is a true testament to their punk (NOT grunge) roots. They blaze through all of these songs, and there's not a weak cut among them. Opening with a blistering reading of Devo's "Turnaround," Nirvana cranks up the volume and never looks back. "D-7" is simply one of my favorite Nirvana moments ever (even if it is a cover). The songs "Even in His Youth" and "Aneurysm" (this is the old demo version, not the one found on Incesticide) are from a January 1, 1991 demo session, while the remiaing four tracks are pulled from the band's October 1990 John Peel session (by the way, these recordings are the first ones made with new drummer Dave Grohl in the band). If you can't find a copy of this album anywhere, don't get too discouraged. "Molly's Lips," "Son of a Gun," and "Turnaround" can all be found on Incesticide, while "Even in His Youth" and "Aneurysm" are also on the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" single. "D-7," I believe, is on some import versions of the "Lithium" single. But all in all, this is a great document of what Nirvana was doing during the days between Bleach and Nevermind. If you buy this, you'll love it.
