Book Description

May 1, 2004
Explaining why women between the ages of 35 and 50 often experience significant changes in mood, weight, sex drive, and general well-being due to hormonal imbalances, this guide shows women how to regain control of their hormones - and their lives - and feel good again through natural means. Women who have had long-standing physical and emotional complaints written off by doctors as normal or genetic are provided with step-by-step solutions to such hormone-related problems as weight gain, fibroids, sex-drive doldrums, adult acne, depression, anxiety, irritability, chronic fatigue, and facial hair. Perimenopausal women will be able to regain control of their health by putting together a game plan for renewal - including hormone balancing and weight management plans that will help them feel better - with dramatic, life-changing results.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

For the millions of women who experience a variety of unpleasant and stressful symptoms related to perimenopause, this book offers a straightforward discussion, explaining which medical tests and treatments, including alternative therapy, women should consider. Jackson, who owns a medical practice dedicated to hormonal health in Oregon, finds that women either have no symptoms, mild symptoms that become more pronounced right before menopause, or significant symptoms that require treatment in order to continue their daily routines. She explains the relationship among estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, and their impact on depression, sex drive, weight and headaches. And she presents her information clearly, explaining bodily functions in a way that lay readers can understand. Jackson is quick to suggest alternatives to medication such as stress reduction exercises, change in diet and exercise, although she also discusses the variety of estrogen and other hormonal treatments available. Appendices listing recommended reading for specific problems, products, vitamin and herbal supplement resources and hormone-testing labs, in addition to a glossary, add further value to this instructive book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, February 13, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Hormone Survival Guide for Perimenopause: Balance Your Hormones Naturally (Paperback)
This book is a godsend. After reading it I learned that I'm not losing my grip on sanity...just on my hormones. Now when I go to the doctor, I'll be aware of the tests that should be ordered, how to understand their results, and what alternatives I have for treatment.

I love the fact that the book doesn't have to be read cover-to-cover. I can turn to the chapter about whatever concerns me most about my health. Dr. Jackson has written the medical information in an easy to understand manner, and her advice sounds like something my best friend would say.

I definitely recommend this book to every woman who has concerns about not only menopause, but hormone problems at any stage in life.

3.0 out of 5 stars it's ok, August 8, 2008
This review is from: The Hormone Survival Guide for Perimenopause: Balance Your Hormones Naturally (Paperback)
If you want to find out more about hormone panel testing, then this is a good book to read. I wasn't, and most of the book focuses on hormone testing and adjusting hormonal imbalances. It is clear that the author believes this is THE treatment. It doesn't matter that other doctors will tell you this test isn't helpful or accurate, the author states: "If you are fed this line, don't swallow it." And she may very well be correct but I tended to get annoyed at her inferences that her way is the way. I gave it 3 stars because it does give some good and thorough information about the hormones and information about some of the symptoms. And it did list labs in the appendix that will do hormone testing for consumers through saliva. But when I went through them, there was really only one that would do the testing w/o a healthcare person. Some states don't allow the consumer to do this direct testing. It's an ok book, just not what I was looking for.
