Dennis Brain played with a passion known to few men. His early demise robbed horn aficiandos of years of joy and adulation. Instead, we are relegated to a few miniscule exerpts from his repertoire. This album, originally released in vinyl under the title Dennis Brain - The Art of the Horn is the very best representation of his skill and his soul. If you are able to absorb Concerto for Horn Number 2 in E flat major, K417 without tears welling in your eyes, then you should consider the piccolo or oboe as the object of your affection. Brain was, is, and will forever remain brilliant and unattainable in his art, emotion, and form.

Being a horn player myself, and having played all of the pieces on this CD at one time or another, I know the difficulty that the music on this album can pose. Dennis Brain however makes every moment sound effortless, allowing the listener to concentrate on the shear beauty of the music.
