Product Description

Powder Through Expanders (PTX) are designed to work in conjunction with the Case Activated Powder Drop. These Expanders eliminate the need for a separate case mouth expander die on the AP progressive press, freeing up an extra station on your progressive press for a taper crip die or powder cop. The Expanders work for lead, plated and jacketed bullets and can be used with the Bullet Feeder for plated and jacketed bullets.

They do no affect powder metering accuracy.

If you don't get enough flare to stick the bullet in the cartridge the bullet will tip over and jam the next stroke yet another irritation.

I absolutely love my Hornady LNL reloading press, and having these power through expanders to save me an expansion die is a no-brainer.

On these I have mixed feelings. They work as advertised but seize in the cartridge a lot. What I am referring to is they are two stage expansion. The first stage opens the cartridge to the advertised size and the second flares the mouth for bullet seating.

The love or hate of this will depend on the bullets used with them. If you are loading cast bullets that are typically 0.001" oversize you will need to really crank down to get enough expansion to keep the bullet in place while the turn table rotates. This in turn causes the powder dump to seize or hang up on the down stroke. Nothing that you can't live with but if your bench isn't anchored down to a concrete floor this can be annoying. If you don't get enough flare to stick the bullet in the cartridge the bullet will tip over and jam the next stroke yet another irritation.

Ok with that said and there are remedies like rock solid bench anchoring and special care I still, in my opinion, I find an expander die easier. There are some other issues like the flaky ill conceived depth adjustment used to stop the travel on the powder drop stroke that is used to adjust the expansion. I am considering, being a mechanical engineer, redesigning my powder drop to incorporate a better solution. Which brings me to another point. Who ever thought those two tiny screws would stand up to the stress over time of the expansion pressures necessary?

The use of these expanders will also make adjusting the powder throw with 9mm and other short cartridges barely do-able. I even had to cut down the factory adjustment screw to fit at the adjustment needed. Another thing that told me this was an ad-hoc addition.

If I have so much grief with these why do I still use them?

Although I have read some reviews that said this did not flare the case mouth enough, and that an aftermarket expander was better, I did not have any issues seating cast bullets. Seems to work just fine.

I absolutely love my Hornady LNL reloading press, and having these power through expanders to save me an expansion die is a no-brainer. Add this to your case activated powder drop station on your press, and it expands the case mouth at the same time it's dropping the powder charge. It always expands properly for your bullet seating station. Get one for each caliber you load, and just swap out the expander when you change calibers!

These case neck expanders save a reloading step with each bullet loaded. Are well machined and fit perfectly. They do no affect powder metering accuracy.

Highly recommended for 9mm & 45 ACP

Works great. Now I can free up another station for a powder cop. A little tricky getting it all hooked up on the side but once that is done, adjustments are easy.

great product opens up a station on my press for a crimp die. Hornady needs to make all of the PTX's the same lenght so you don't have to readjust the powder measure. I ended up taking mine to work and machining it down so it's the same as my 10mm PTX and it works great no more adjustments needed.
