Easy Read,
This review is from: Horned Death (Hardcover)
I am a very avid outdoorsman who loves hunting, but I have never been drawn to the dark continent. When reading hunting publications, I typically skip over the articles on African hunts. I decided to pick up this book for a perspective on what hunting must have been like on a continent that was still untamed. I was not disappointed. The adventures described by John Burger are fantastic. The reasons we hunt vary, but at the core is adventure, excitement, and the amazing experiences we undertake during the persuit of game animals. Without getting too philosophical, this book has it all. It is a very easy read. Each chapter is a different adventure(cape buffalo, pigmies, lions, elephants, cannibals, etc). I still have no desire to jump on a plane to Africa to hunt cape buffalo, but as a hunter I have a great appreciation and respect for men like these who hunted when hunting was tough. I have loaned my copy of this book to all my friends that would take it, and they all loved it. I will soon read it again myself.

A gripping and exciting read. A well written book offering a fascinating glimpse into the life of a highly ethical professional hunter during the early 1900's until the 1940's. The author takes us through some of his many adventures through Central and Southern Africa. Rough Cape buffalo, elephants, wild man eating lions, cannibals, his pet leopard, a little something for everyone. A must read for anyone interested in hunting or in African history.

I got this book because I plan to go buffalo hunting some day and I am reading all that I can on the subject. This book had some interesting stories, but it is not that great a book. Boddington on Buffalo is great.

This is a very interesting book. I enjoyed the stories leading up to the actually conflict of man and beast. It isfilled with griping tales and suspense. You become asorbed, just as if you are the one hunting the dangerous and crafty buffalo, make a mistake and it will cost you, most likely your life. There are grave yards in Africa that house many hunters, that under estimated the ability of the dangeous "buff". If you like hunting dangeous game, then you will like this book! Best prices were on Amazon! |
