3.0 out of 5 stars I found problems with the Mirage 2TB but I decided to deal with it., September 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HornetTek Mirage 2TB (2000GB) High Definition 1080i HDMI USB & LAN Multimedia Player w/ Remote Control (Movie / Photo / Music / TV Scheduled Recording / uPnP /SDHC MS Card Reader /USB Host) - Retail
If your video library has less than 500 movies or less than 400GB in size or your Drive is smaller than 2TB you should be ok and you may not experience any problems. This review is mainly for those who have a larger video collection because that will reveal problems with the Mirage.
In a nutshell, the problem was pinpointed to the built-in formatting tool which would never truely format the 2TB hard drive to FAT32 (deceptive because it
says IT DID!) 4/5 of the total capacity will simply vanish. Check your total capacity remaining after copying your movies to the HDD by going to "TV Timer" then "Edit" to see if it's correct. Mine was totally wrong. Trying to format
2TB with the computer wont work either because FAT32 in its original form is
not even available on newer computers and usually comes with exFAT format
which also don't work on the Hornettek Mirage.
FAT32 is NOT originally designed for large drives.
The problem is the built-in formatting tool don't work either (for 2TB
drives)! And to the people who think that it does work...just wait..., your
problems wont start until you use up 189 to 400GB. At that point your 2TB
hard drive will show "FULL". So I did a search and found a $10 software
program called Swissknife V3 that will format a 2TB disk to the old FAT32
format directly to the Mirage and it worked absolutely perfectly! I was able
to transfer about 1200 movies to it and still have about 1TB remaining.
Problem solved!
I am disappointed that there will NEVER be any
updates to the Mirage even though it's still being sold as an updatable
media player the Mieage has been Discontinued by the manufactorer. I am disappointed that the clock is in military time only and there is also NO quick search function to find a specific movie. You just have to scroll through 100's of movies until you find it.
But I have decided to keep it because I simply could not find another media player on the market that could record directly from ALL media sources
including scheduled TV programs and had a built-in 2TB hard drive. Even the
products designed to replace the Mirage can't record live TV programming.
