I WAS THERE,

This review is from: Horns of Plenty Part 2 (Audio CD)
This gives an idea of what Stan Kenton was trying to do in the world of so called "crossover" music. He called it Neophonic music. The One O' Clock is as good as any big band anywhere. Their playing is indistinguishable from the playing of seasoned professionals. Larry Ford's lead trumpet playing is just one example of how good the band is. I was witness to the concert at NTSU. The other side is that wonderful lush sound Kenton created by using a melliphonium (a type of alto horn pitched in E-flat) section in his orchestrations. Unfortunately, the melliphonium sound was lost due to the economics of fielding a large band bit it was wonderful while it lasted.

Must By CD...,
This review is from: Horns of Plenty Part 2 (Audio CD)
Anyone who is a Stan Kenton fan will love this CD. The University Of North Texas puts such energy into the performance. I didn't think anyone else could play the Kenton charts well until I found this CD. Must by.
