5.0 out of 5 stars Horowitz at his most daring & dazzling, October 27, 2009
This review is from: Horowitz: Schubert: Sonata in B-Flat & Mozart: Sonata in F (Horowitz Collection) (Audio CD)
This is definitely one of the most exciting collections in the entire RCA Horowitz discography, presenting the pianist at his most dazzling and daring.

Czerny's Variations on a Theme by Rode was recorded in 1944. There's background noise, but Horowitz's astonishingly electrifying performance shines through and leaves you breathless.

Mozart Sonata in F K332, recorded in 1947 with better sound quality, displays Horowitz's amazingly light and delicate playing.

Mendelssohn's technically very taxing Variations serieuses Op.54, recorded in 1946, is played with transcendental virtuosity at break-neck speed.

Schubert's D960 Sonata is recorded in 1953 at Carnegie Hall recital in very good mono. Horowitz plays this piece like no other pianists, treating the music like a fragile tapestry woven with magical tonal colours and ethereal beauty. This is Horowitz at his most poetic and one of my favourite recordings of this wonderfully rich and inspired solo piano work.
