Book Description

September 1997 4 and upP and up
When Horrible Holly meets a raptor, it sets into motion a hilarious case of mistaken identity. Suddenly, the new Holly is helping with the housework, winning medals for swimming, and starring in the school play. With its cartoon-like illustrations and uproarious plot, Horrible Holly's Pet Raptor is destined to be a long-time favorite. Full color.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K. A tale of a truly horrible child whose own Granny suggests "a bath in cold onion soup." Holly terrorizes her town, her home, and her school, until the day she decides to try to claim an escaped baby raptor as a pet. The text is frantically overwritten?"Holly felt that hot, smelly breath on her face and saw those huge, glistening teeth coming towards her"?and is suitably illustrated with garishly frenetic illustrations. Clever picture books starring semi-villains abound?James Stevenson's books about the Worst, Jack Gantos's "Rotten Ralph" series, William Steig's Frankenstein-like Shrek (Farrar, 1993)?but Horrible Holly fails to join their company. Readers, like the girl's parents, will not regret her exile to a desert island and will happily replace her with more engaging company.?Kathleen Whalin, Greenwich Country Day School,

4.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes a raptor is just a raptor, March 12, 2003

This review is from: Horrible Holly's Pet Raptor (Hardcover)
A funny and wonderfully illustrated book for toddlers and young grade schoolers. With all due respect to the previous reviewer, there is a place for children's books that promote "healing and reconciliation," and a place for those that engage young readers simply by being silly and even slightly naughty fun. My three-year-old understands the satire of a little girl whose behavior is so horrible that a carnivorous dinosaur takes her place...and nobody notices! She doesn't for a minute believe that it's true, and it actually stimulates discussion on the consequences of being naughty. It isn't uplifting or literary, but it's fun to read at bedtime, and sometimes that's enough.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a book for grandparents, October 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Horrible Holly's Pet Raptor (Hardcover)
As I read through this book I kept waiting for the 'Horrible' part to give way to reconciliation and the healing of relationships. However, this did not happen. The caustic comments and poor choices continued throughout. I cannot imagine anyone being pleased with the parent-child relationship portrayed here and certainly no grandparent would want themselves to be associated with the character in this book The emphasis in this book is one of self-gratification for the parents and presents the child and grandmother as being expendable. Not the message I would have my children glean from reading for enjoyment. I am a school librarian and definitely will not have this book in my collection. Mr. Evans is obviously a talented artist, I am sorry that he has wasted that talent on this publication.
