Sometimes a raptor is just a raptor
A funny and wonderfully illustrated book for toddlers and young grade schoolers. With all due respect to the previous reviewer, there is a place for children's books that promote "healing and reconciliation," and a place for those that engage young readers simply by being silly and even slightly naughty fun. My three-year-old understands the satire of a little girl...

Not a book for grandparents
As I read through this book I kept waiting for the 'Horrible' part to give way to reconciliation and the healing of relationships. However, this did not happen. The caustic comments and poor choices continued throughout. I cannot imagine anyone being pleased with the parent-child relationship portrayed here and certainly no grandparent would want themselves to be...

This review is from: Horrible Holly's Pet Raptor (Hardcover)
A funny and wonderfully illustrated book for toddlers and young grade schoolers. With all due respect to the previous reviewer, there is a place for children's books that promote "healing and reconciliation," and a place for those that engage young readers simply by being silly and even slightly naughty fun. My three-year-old understands the satire of a little girl whose behavior is so horrible that a carnivorous dinosaur takes her place...and nobody notices! She doesn't for a minute believe that it's true, and it actually stimulates discussion on the consequences of being naughty. It isn't uplifting or literary, but it's fun to read at bedtime, and sometimes that's enough.

As I read through this book I kept waiting for the 'Horrible' part to give way to reconciliation and the healing of relationships. However, this did not happen. The caustic comments and poor choices continued throughout. I cannot imagine anyone being pleased with the parent-child relationship portrayed here and certainly no grandparent would want themselves to be associated with the character in this book The emphasis in this book is one of self-gratification for the parents and presents the child and grandmother as being expendable. Not the message I would have my children glean from reading for enjoyment. I am a school librarian and definitely will not have this book in my collection. Mr. Evans is obviously a talented artist, I am sorry that he has wasted that talent on this publication.
