Book Description

December 2003
Chills, spills and empty coffins! This wide-ranging collection of twenty-four spine-tingling stories draws on the best traditions of classic horror, from powerful myths and folktales to contemporary stories of man-made terrors. With contributions by writers of the calibre of John Steinbeck, Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Dickens, T. H. White, Philip K. Dick and Stephen King, this is a truly chilling anthology.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 6^-12. Price has done an admirable job of selecting the two dozen stories in this collection: there's something for everyone, from the fainthearted to the hard-core genre fan. The collection includes works by such noted authors as Steinbeck and Poe as well as by familiar writers like Joan Aiken, Stephen King, Leon Garfield, and Price herself, with individual tales running the gamut from mildly unsettling to truly frightening. Leon Garfield's "A Grave Misunderstanding," Charles Dickens' "Captain Murderer," and Ellen Emerson White's "The Boy Next Door" are some of the most enjoyable. Filled with terrific Halloween read-alouds, the book will find a comfortable home in both classroom and library collections. The scratchy pen-and-ink drawings lend a suitably eerie tone to the stories and manage to make even teddy bears look malevolent. More About the Author

On the day I was born, my Dad was given a typewriter. My Dad also signed my first contract, because I was too young to sign it - I was 16.

It was Dad who gave me the First and Second Jungle Books and the Just-So Stories for my seventh Christmas present too - and I still love them. But it was my mother who did all she could to teach me to read and to love books.

I've written 55 books, from Nursery Stories to things like 'The Bearwood Witch' and 'The Sterkarm Handshake' which are criticised for being 'too adult'.

Recently, I've joined the kindle revolution. I plan to publish most of my backlist on kindle, and I have joined together with several other writers to form Kindle Authors UK - see the blog feeds below. Look me up in the Kindle Store!

I also give talks in schools, and am RLF Fellow at De Montfort University in Leicester.
