5.0 out of 5 stars KICK *** ALBUM!!!!
I think that this album really showed that heavy music and metal is not limited to only men. Its really awesome to see women playing music that isnt soft and weak. Its really great to see women playing heavy metal. I totally reccommend this album to anyone whom is a fan of metal. This shows that metal is still alive. RIGHT ON!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointing In Retrospect
I bought this album after first owning Drain STH's "Freaks of Nature" and this one seems a little bit disappointing. Granted, on this album they likely didn't have the capital to pay for top-notch production value so there are not as many interesting effects and sounds here as on "Freaks of Nature," but I still find "Horror Wrestling" to sound a bit weak in comparison. 5.0 out of 5 stars Bam!!!, December 8, 2003
This review is from: Horror Wrestling (Audio CD)
Yeah well hmmm....usually when there is an all girl band out there it is a novelty item released by record labels...Kittie comes to mind here, but Drain is/was the excpetion. Very talented musicians from Sweden that know how to play their instruments, not to mention better than a lot of the other bands out there. Pick this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alice in Chains lives on in these women!, July 22, 2000

Yes, if you thought AiC was dead, you're wrong...they've been re-incarnated in 4 beautiful women from Sweeden. The only reason I really picked up Drain's first album (and second) is because someone reccomended them for an alternative for AiC, for two reasons:

A)Drain STH members are fans of Alice. B)Their music is similar to Alice.

Indeed it is. And there is not a bad song on this album. It all starts out with the very heavy "I Don't Mind", and doesn't stop getting better...not till the album ends. These women are the queens of grunge. You must buy the album, now. It's just a sad thing that Drain never got popular in America, because they deserved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drain STH's music is melodic, heavy and mosh pit friendly, September 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Horror Wrestling (Audio CD)
Both of Drain STH CD's truly show that Metal is alive and kicking. This grrls rock with heavy riffs and haunting lyrics that would make Black Sabbath proud. I have seen this band 4 times this year, met them in New Orleans, and have been blown away every time. It is a shame that the American public is taking too long to realize how good this band is. I really hope they make it big soon, because they deserve all the success they can acomplish. It is about time Heavy music makes a comeback, and it is bands like Drain STH that will bring it back alive. I highly recomend that everybody that likes Heavy music get both CD's. You won't be dissapointed. Anybody who wants to can EMail me anytime at Beaten74@aol.com

5.0 out of 5 stars drain exemplifies "modern metal", July 2, 1998
By
Trent Hamilton (North Carolina

This review is from: Horror Wrestling (Audio CD)
today, at least to me, it seems there's a lot of bands too hard to call "hard rock" but not lame enough to call "metal." drain exemplifies this. it's not full of played-out blues progressions and it's not stupid overly-distorted guitar over some brainless idiot growling, but great music with great vocals and a definite depth into the way maria and martina feel (i believe these two write most or all the lyrics.) basically, maria sings beautifully, flavia's guitar work is adequate and not annoyingly self-righteous and anna and martina work together so very well to form an infectious groove that propels the music. a truly magnificent effort from 4 very beautiful and talented ladies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why didn't they stick to this formula???, October 4, 2003
This review is from: Horror Wrestling (Audio CD)
I tell you, if they would've stuck to the formula they used on this CD, but improved on a few things, I'll bet they'd have made it bigger. But instead, they went synth-pop on Freaks of Nature, and that album sounds more like something you'd hear at a goth club than at a mosh pit. This one wouldn't do at a mosh pit either, but it reminds me (in a way) of a Disturbed album, albeit with much flatter vocals. Being a fan of Disturbed, that's a compliment in a way, except Horror Wrestling is quite repetitive, and I often get the feeling that I'm listening to the same track that just played. However, it's nice and heavy, and there's no overreliance on synth or programming. And there's no rapper on it!

Let's put aside the fact that they're all females. All the women want equal rights, so we're not going to give them any leeway just because they possess a uterus, and I'm going to rate it just as I would any album by any artist, regardless of gender, race, nationality, religion, or whatever. I'm basing this on talent, and nothing else. Martina Axen is one hell of a drummer, and although she'll never be anywhere on the level of drumming prodigies like Nick Barker, Criz Mozzati, or Martin Lopez, she makes a big impact on the overall product. Flavia Canel is a decent guitarist at best; as I've stated, the percussion is what makes this album, and the guitar riffs aren't often very strong. Anna Kjellberg's bass guitar is more noticeable on this one than it would be on their next product, but she falls victim to the omnipresent "background bassist" syndrome, as do most bass players. Nevertheless, it wouldn't sound right without her. The only one who doesn't deliver is Maria Sjoholm. Her voice sounds too robotic; she sounds like a drunk zombie and she repeats a lot of patterns. Lyrically, it's just kinda out there; nothing brilliant, but intriguing at times. Production quality is just fine. Recommended, but if you hate nu-metal, don't buy this because it's similar in style.

Oh, and to the reviewer who called the genre of metal "lame": Metallica and Cannibal Corpse aren't the only bands in the genre; the most talented bands in the world (Opeth, Tristania, etc.) aren't rock, they're metal. So do your homework.

On the upside the acoustic portions found here are very well done and pleasing to the ear, while songs like "I Don't Mind" and "Crack The Liars Smile" will keep the house rockin'. I think if I had bought this album first, I would have a higher opinion of it, but looking at it in retrospect I can only label it as decent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Swedish female rockers influenced by Alice In Chains, July 6, 2000
This review is from: Horror Wrestling (Audio CD)
THE BAND: Maria Sjöholm (vocals), Flavia Canel (guitars), Anna Kjellberg (bass), Martina Axén (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (1996) Debut - 15 tracks clocking in at approximately 66 minutes. Included with the disc is a 6-page foldout containing song titles/credits, song lyrics, band photos, and thank you's. All words & music by Drain STH band members, except "Ace Of Spades" (by Motorhead). Recorded at Decibel Studio, Stockholm, Sweden. Label - Mercury.

COMMENTS: The all girl hard rock/heavy metal that plays like Alice In Chains. Slow and methodical, grinding and grungy guitars, heavy drums, wonderful vocal harmonies... somewhat shocked at how hard this female band rocked. Touring in Europe & the U.S. (some with 'Ozzfest') after their 2nd album "Freaks Of Nature" (1999) couldn't stop their break-up in 2000. Too bad - these Swedish ladies could rock. Best songs here are "Crack The Liar's Smile", "Serve The Shame" (electric and acoustic versions), "Mind Over Body", and the opener "I Don't Mind". Some nice acoustic moments, great vocals, with lots of solid melodies. Lyrics are dark and twisted... surrounding betrayal, sorrow, death, and humiliation... and a frequent use of the word "REPENT". Drain STH is worth a listen! Only crack on this album is that some of the songs sound dangerously similar to each other. Drain's slowed version of Motorhead's "Ace Of Spades" is truly their own rendition of a classic. Trivia - singer Maria Sjöholm, is married to Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Look for other Drain STH band members in 2005 - now in Snake River Conspiracy, Blowsight and Hanzel Und Gretyl.
