It was almost impossible to believe that this was truly Eve 6 when I popped Horrorscope into the CD player. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great songs almost ruined by heavy handed production.
These guys have very creative lyrics and good music to go with them. However, their producer for this CD decided to fill in the "empty spaces" in their songs with way too much synth. The synth tramples on the vocals on some songs, almost drowning them out by competing for the same sonic space. While some of keyboard sounds do fit in OK, most of the time it...

It was almost impossible to believe that this was truly Eve 6 when I popped Horrorscope into the CD player. I discovered that this trio has formed a much ballsier, tighter sound, while keeping all the infectious hooks and witty wordplay from their debut album. Eve 6 is influenced by old school punk rock...and it shines wonderfully through in rockers like "Nocturnal" and "Jet Pack." They also throw new elements into the mix, as "Rescue" and "On the Roof Again" have light industrial touches. The ballad "Here's to the Night" shows Eve 6's sensitive capabilities. Overall, Horrorscope is a catchy, incredible punk-pop album. Run...don't walk to your nearest record store.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart Punk, April 7, 2003
By
This review is from: Horrorscope (Audio CD)
Though definitely leaning on the "pop" of the term "pop punk," Eve 6 is perhaps one of the wittiest and best-educated bands in rock & roll today. Deft-spoken linguist Max Collins steps fresh off of the success of the band's radio-friendly first release to produce an even greater collection of ear candy complete with Eve 6's patented tongue-twisting lyrical stylings. From the frank honesty and tongue-in-cheek wit of "Promise" to the nearly frantic urgency of "Enemy," the album unravels and keeps you listening close to the lyrics so the tunes can be as amusing as they are engrossing. While definitely not my general taste in music, Eve 6 is just one of those bands you can't help but listen to, and come away from feeling smarter for the time you spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks like a common phenomonon again, May 21, 2001

I traditionally only listen to ska, but the Eve 6 CD somehow caught my eye. Horroscope is definitely an amazing CD. Bang and Girl eyes are certainly the best tracks in the CD, but nocturnal is also worthy of much praise. Anyone, whether you love punk, pop (God forbid), classical, ska, metal; it is very worth your while to pick up horroscope. Wondering about the title of this review?? Listen to "girl eyes" on horroscope and you will understand.

4.0 out of 5 stars The 2nd best pop-punk CD this year (Next to MxPx), August 5, 2000
This review is from: Horrorscope (Audio CD)
Eve 6 have greatly matured since the days of their self-titled debut. Their music has become more in-depth, the lyrics became smarter, and the CD became BETTER. This is the 2nd best pop-punk CD this year, next to MxPx's "The Everpassing Moment". Stand out tracks include the first single, "Promise", as well as "Nocturnal", "Rescue", and "On The Roof Again", which is a hilarious track. My only complaint is it wears off really quick. It just doesn't have the same life in it after the 15th or so listen. And it may be a little too goody-goody lyric-wise. Let's face it, with a track called "Amphetamines", you would think the track would thrash at breakneck speed with almost completely imcomprehensible lyrics. But it's only a song about the most worn-out topic on Earth, GIRLS. But aside from that, it is a great CD and somphmore effort.

These guys have very creative lyrics and good music to go with them. However, their producer for this CD decided to fill in the "empty spaces" in their songs with way too much synth. The synth tramples on the vocals on some songs, almost drowning them out by competing for the same sonic space. While some of keyboard sounds do fit in OK, most of the time it has the flavor of a bad re-mix job. The producer should have stayed away from the ProTools and just let the music "breathe" a little more --- their lyrics and hooks deserve to be heard, not to be drowned out.

Other than that problem (which makes the CD difficult for me to enjoy listening to in spots), it's pretty good. As the Amazon.com reviewer said, if you like synth/keyboard, you might like it more than I do, but you had better really like them because they overpower everything else in many spots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff..., July 12, 2000
This review is from: Horrorscope (Audio CD)
I had to say I was thoroughly impressed by Eve 6's self-titled debut...it reminded me of the golden age of Green Day. This album is much like the first, with plenty of intelligent new lyrics and rhythms to work with. Songs like 'Rescue', 'Promise', and 'Nightmare' are all good examples of this group's talent. This is one CD that is well worth your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eve 6 rocks, and so does this disc, September 10, 2002

This CD is better than just about everything that's out there in the modern rock market. Eve 6's lyrics on this album are cunning and unique, such as "I professed my love in an animalistic manner, like an endless foreign flick, my subtitles were sick" in Rescue, "Maladjusted just untrusted, rusted, sometimes brilliant busted thoughts" in Promise, "Your heinous highness broke her hymen" in On the Roof Again, and "It's good to be bad if it's better than bored", in Girl Eyes. Those are just a few of the many examples of great lyrical content.

Eve 6 definitely have their own style with some valuable traits. I perceive them to be classy, catchy, clever, and honest. Max Collins' voice is packed with originality and the lyrics are often loaded with sexual content, covered with class.
As for the music, this is basically pop punk(punk with a poppy edge, DO NOT think Blink 182, Eve 6 is nothing like them!) with touches of 80s rock and early to mid 90s 3 chord rock(such as the Pixies).

Horrorscope is definitely a one of a kind, and you're guaranteed to find nothing like it anywhere. This CD always makes me smile when I listen to it, and it's one of my personal favorites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally!!! An Alternative Band with a good Sophomore cd!!!!!, August 12, 2001
This review is from: Horrorscope (Audio CD)
After many Alternative Bands have had disasterious Sophomore cd's such as Smashmouth and Harvey Danger, Eve 6 creates a sophomore cd with more infectious guitar chords and intellegent lyrics that even rival the first cd. I've been a fan of Eve 6 ever since I heard "Inside Out". I really liked the first cd, and i'm really pleased to say I like the second one just as much.

Horrorscope's smash hit "Here's to the Night" is a pretty good track. Good Lyrics, nice ballad. However, it's overplayed like hell, and it isn't their style. I hope if someone buys this cd, they listen to all the other tracks instead of just playing this one and raving about how Max wrote it for them. See what happens when MTV gets in the way? But anyway, with that small rant aside, you have an excellent cd.

"Promise" and "On the Roof Again", the two other singles are excellent songs. These should have gotten as big as "Here's to the Night", but they weren't original enough for MTV. Other great tracks are "Amphetamines", "Enemy", "Nocturnal", "Jet Pack", "Nightmare" and "Bang", which is my favorite song on the cd. The other tracks are pretty good, but I just don't listen to them as much, I don't know why.

So in all, Horrorscope is an excellent cd from an excellent band. Keep up the good work Eve 6, and don't screw up like Smashmouth and Harvey Danger!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad song on the CD, August 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Horrorscope (Audio CD)
The new CD from Eve 6 is in one word...AWESOME! Its one of those where you can just listen from beginning to end without skipping one song. I still have my favorites (Rescue, Amphetamines, Nocturnal, On the Roof Again) but all the songs are GREAT. The lyrics are good, the hooks are very catchy, and the overall sound is great. If I have one complaint it would be....oh wait I don't have any complaints! Go buy this CD. Its definitely worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A pop-punk classic, with its flaws, of course, February 2, 2005
This review is from: Horrorscope (Audio CD)
Eve 6 is one of those bands that came into the scene just at the right time. Their release of "horrorscope" was right in between the late 90's, early 2000's pop-punk boom (which has slowly died down), and set the pace for many great bands to come (American hi-fi, Sr-71 ect.). Although it is a sophmore release, "horrorscope" could be called the bands best effort, and with songs like "here's to the night" and "Nocturnal (sad eyes)", it'd be hard to argue otherwise.

One. Rescue- Opening track, very catchy, and should have been a single, IMO 5/5

Two. Promise- First single, had to grow on me. Pretty catchy after a couple listens 4/5

Three. One the roof again- Second single, VERY AWESOME, and one of my favorites 5/5

Four. Sunset strip b***h- Another one that had to grow on me 3/5

Five. Here's to the night- I'm not sure if it was a single, but its a really good song. Very anthemic, and of course, it's catchy 5/5

Six. Anphetamines- Good, but not the best they can do. It's borderline filler 3/5

Seven. Enemy- A great way to bring the album back up to speed 4.5/5

Eight. Nocturnal- Greatness, and the chorus is one to end all others 5/5

Nine. Jet pack- I like the chours cuz' its a bit slower than the others but still catchy 4/5

Ten. Nightmare- Quality pop-punk, with an awesome chorus 5/5

Eleven. Bang- I don't like it 2/5

Twelve. Girl Eyes- Bad closer 3/5
