Book Description

April 1, 2004
What can be done with a horse that's hard to bridle, won't stand for a new farrier, or kicks while being ridden? Why would a sweet horse suddenly turn mean? How can an owner calm a horse that becomes a nervous wreck at shows? What should be done if a gelding attacks a mare? In The Horse Behavior Problem Solver, equine behavior expert Jessica Jahiel offers proven solutions to these and other common horse behavior problems.

This comprehensive handbook uses a friendly question-and-answer format. Each question includes a detailed real-life case study. The author identifies the source of the trouble and offers practical, proven techniques that can help solve the problem. The situations presented are common to all horses and horse lovers, and Jahiel's advice is applicable to every breed of horse and to both Western and English riders.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Horses are big animals, and the humans who work with and ride them are relatively puny. How do we get the proper conduct from an uncooperative horse? How do we stop potentially dangerous behavior? And, ultimately, how do we establish a healthy relationship between horse and rider? Jahiel, an equine behaviorist and lecturer, answers these questions and many more in this excellent guide to equine behavior modification. Drawn extensively from the author's online newsletter Horse Sense, the information is presented in a question-and-answer format divided into sections covering specific aspects of horse conduct. Jahiel chooses questions to answer based on their broad applicability and provides extensive answers based on a vast knowledge of equine behavior, both innate (nature) and human-caused (nurture). This comprehensive book is an excellent choice for inclusion in the equestrian section, even for libraries with small collections. Nancy Bent

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Horse Advice Book I have EVER read!, June 30, 2004
By
Sona Siegel (Mackinaw, Il United States) - See all my reviews
I have been suscribed to Jessica's HorseSense online newsletter for some time, and as soon as I found out she was putting a book together I knew I had to have it. I recommend it to ANYONE who wants to know more about horse behavior. Jessica explains everything in an easy to read and easy to understand manner. She addresses almost every problem that horse owners and horse riders have and the advice is just plain great. I would love some day to be able to meet her to share my admiration of her knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hores Behavior Problem Solver, June 22, 2004
By
Drea B Bowen (Silverdale, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This book is a must have for everyone who strives to be a better horsewoman/man. Jessica's perspective challenges us to look at things from the horse's prospective, to ask ourselves if we are communicating the right questions for the answers we get from our horses. Her advice is invaluable to me as I train my two 4 year olds. I refer to this book weekly and have read it cover to cover many times over. It seems that each time I read the questions and answers, I pick up something I missed the time before. Or maybe, the second or third reading, I am ready to Hear that part of the answer! More, Jessica! Keep writing!!

Unless you've totally missed the boat with natural horsemanship, you know that the key to doing anything with horses is having patience, a theme that is repeated over and over again in every section of this book. I needed help with a bucker, and Jessica's bucking info basically reiterated what I already know. Check saddle fit, and call in a professional trainer. If I had the money for a professional trainer, I wouldn't have bought her book.
