Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7 The team of Patent and Munoz contribute another useful and unique volume on the science of horsemanship. Five chapters and 51 color photographs describe the differences among the many shades, patterns, and markings of horses' coats. Included are basics about heredity and why colors vary. In her usual no-nonsense style, Patent defines scientific and equine terms. Unfamiliar words are italicized in the text and included in a three-page glossary. Patent also notes the lack of consistency in differentiating some colors. One statement, claiming that there is no difference between the pinto and paint, will probably infuriate supporters of the American Paint Horse Association, who consider paint horses as a distinct breed in which only certain pintos may qualify. Munoz' photographs display a uniformly high standard. The subject continues to fascinate young horse lovers, and this book is bound to be a favorite. More About the Author

Every since I was a child I've loved nature and animals. I spent my time out of doors, picking flowers and scooping tadpoles out of ponds. So it's no wonder I studied biology and became an author myself of a favorite gift when I was young, a book about nature. I've expanded into other fascinating areas of nonfiction, too, especially historical topics of the American west, such as Lewis and Clark and Native Americans.
My work has given me the gift of travel to all sorts of fascinating places such as the Galapagos Island, the Costa Rican Rain Forest, and the famous cave at Lascaux, France, full of amazing ancient art that is no longer open to visitors.
