5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic horse scenes a must!
I loved this book. It is very rare to find mysteries (or any type of novel) that present knowledgeable writing with regard to the 'horsey' end of the story. This book has great descriptions of A circuit shows, people, horses, equipment, etc. I especially like the jumping play-by-play. I eagerly bought Jody Jaffe's next two books after reading this one and was disappointed...

2.0 out of 5 stars This book is disappointing.
Nattie Gold is a fun character but the book is not very absorbing and the writing not engaging enough to support a so-so plot.

I loved this book. It is very rare to find mysteries (or any type of novel) that present knowledgeable writing with regard to the 'horsey' end of the story. This book has great descriptions of A circuit shows, people, horses, equipment, etc. I especially like the jumping play-by-play. I eagerly bought Jody Jaffe's next two books after reading this one and was disappointed that she's drifted away from the horse and riding scenes that appear in this first try. Still, I highly recommend this particular book and I hope she'll continue writing in this vein sometime in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars A couple of plot holes, but a very fun read, December 31, 1999
Overall "Horse of a Different Killer" is great fun, and I really enjoyed it. I found it hard to put it down, and raced to the end. Maybe that was the problem..after it was finished, I still had several questions about some of the motivations behind the murders. For instance, who would have really stood to profit from Ruskie's death? As a mystery, it may be a little flawed, but as a rollicking good fun horse story for grownups, it is a winner. I would particularly recommend it to equestriennes. I really look forward to the continuing adventures of Nattie and Brenda.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read with excellent ability to weave facts into fiction, April 2, 1997
By A Customer
This is a good mystery with an excellent interweaving of fact and fiction. She certainly knows her horses and is able to smoothly include the background facts without intruding on the story or its characters. I liked the central character very much both as a woman and as a detective. The story is well-plotted and the characters are more than cardboard figures. Some of the mistakes are really funny (spelling frisee as frizzee or using North Carolina instead of South Carolina), but they are only noticeable because the book is so well-crafted. I recommend this to all mystery lovers, but particularly to Dick Francis fans. Some of the other mysteries about horses, particularly Caroline Banks efforts are so awful its great to find Jaffe. I hope she writes many mor

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully funny and suspenseful horse crazy book, December 3, 1997
By A Customer
I bought this book to read with my 14 year old cousin as a Chistmas gift. She read it to me, to her father and anyone she could get to listen to her. For a horse crazy girl to give to another it was the perfect gift. It is well writen, fun and suspenseful. We can't wait to read the next and the next.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Light Mystery, January 5, 1999
By A Customer
I thought that this mystery, in regards to the dirty buisness of the horse show world was not very deep, but I still enjoyed it. To write a book that appeals to a horse person, like myself, It takes one to write it and do a great job- like Ms Jaffe. This novel catered directly to my knowledge and love for horses.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good mystery that happens to be about horses, May 10, 2004
By A Customer
So many horsey mysteries and pretty weak on plot and character but Jody Jaffe's debut novel covers all the bases. I found it had to put down, and even my un-horsey mom enjoyed it. Can't wait to pick up the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book if you love horses or just excellent mysteries, October 14, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: A Horse of a Different Killer (Hardcover)
Super first book by an author as exiting and fun herself as the character in her book. During a recent visit with this interesting horse-women, I found out that her books are almost autobiographical!(she does "say" the only difference is that she HAS NOT been involved with any murders!) Right. Like her main character, Ms. Jaffe is a horse-person and previously a journalist; her handsome hubsand is a accomplished news reporter. And she does have a horse called 'Brenda Starr' that she shows when ever she can. One might mistake this book for a cozy but it's not. We have a strong, gutst female lead who I feel like Muller's will just become stronger and stronger. Ms. Jaffe is as clever and funny as her character. Both would make a great best friend! Read and be delighted!!!

What a great story! Finally another book written by a true horse-person! I read it straight through, couldn't put it down, was late for work...and it was worth it! Wonderful writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars at last, a mystery for horse show people, August 12, 1997
This is lots of fun, particularly if you're a horse lover, and especially if you actually ride and show. An irreverant (and unfortunately all too accurate) picture of the rather snobby, yet eccentric horse show world
