Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

The A–Z of Horse Diseases and Health Problems is a book for breeders, studmasters, trainers, grooms, riders, pony club members — in fact anybody who owns or works with horses. It helps them to recognize the signs of illness and to identify the problem. It provides them with ready access to information so that they can help a horse recover when it is distressed or not well; know when to call the veterinarian; apply first aid or begin the right treatment. Tim Hawcroft draws on his specialist veterinary knowledge and years of experience in working with horses to describe the most common and easily recognizable illnesses and accidents that a horse may suffer. He provides full details of signs of disease, causes and treatments. There is an A–Z section on signs of the disease and diagnosis and another for causes and treatment, and each area is illustrated by color photographs of what to look for. Chapters on first aid and on the features of the healthy horse are also included. This easy-to-use comprehensive guide is an invaluable reference book which can be used on the spot, simply and quickly, by both novice and expert.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Well-Informed Guide, April 4, 2000
This review is from: A-Z of Horse Diseases & Health Problems: Signs, Diagnoses, Causes, Treatment (Hardcover)
As a pre-vet student, this book provided me with excellent descriptions of horse diseases and health problems. The pictures accompanying many of the ailments were helpful; however, I wish the book had been a larger size instead of the small version I read. The author kept the diagnoses concise and to the point, and the suggested treatments were informative. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in maintaining the health of their horse.

I felt that this book left a lot to be desired and was written for the layperson with NO medical background. The UC Davis Book of Horses is a much more complete reference book , absolutely worth the extra cost.
