5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect teacher for the beginning horse owner
I have just recently purchased a horse and had to learn a great many things at once. Through the use of this book and its wonderful, concise photographs, I've been able to learn the fundamentals of grooming my horse...and let me say she looks wonderful! Not many horse books reach this far down into the fundamentals and enable one to really take a look at the basics...

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard to find a good grooming book
I bought this book because I thought it would be just as good as another in this series "Getting the most from Riding Lessons". I was really looking for specifics on grooming with highly detailed photos and step by step highly detailed instructions and tips. This book has some of this.

There's a good section on catching, tying, and handling the horse. There...

I have just recently purchased a horse and had to learn a great many things at once. Through the use of this book and its wonderful, concise photographs, I've been able to learn the fundamentals of grooming my horse...and let me say she looks wonderful! Not many horse books reach this far down into the fundamentals and enable one to really take a look at the basics. I was also impressed with the emphasis on safety, and I have probably avoided a few bad situations because of it. Since reading this book, I've begun amassing the rest of Ms. Hill's guides. If they are all as useful as this one, I think my horse will thank me.

There is some basic safety information omitted.
The hoof care is completely lacking. There is only information on how to lift and support your horses feet. This should be a VERY detailed section of the book considering how important it is to a horse.
Daily grooming info is only OK.
Washing section is acceptable to good.
Clipping section is good but doesnt cover special clipping patterns.
Mane and tail care and braiding is good.
No leg wrap information is included.
No transport of horse information is included.

This all said - it's really hard to find a great grooming book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horse Handling & Grooming, April 13, 2000
This review is from: Horse Handling & Grooming: A Step-By-Step Photographic Guide to Mastering over 100 Horsekeeping Skills (Horsekeeping Skills Library) (Paperback)
As a new owner of young untrained horses this book was invaluable in my library. The step-by-step photos make every skill easy to understand and attempt with your own horse. The instruction text is clear and concise and Cherry Hill has covered the "must knows" for every horse owner. I would recommend this book for any horse person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beginner-Great Picture Guide, February 23, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Horse Handling & Grooming: A Step-By-Step Photographic Guide to Mastering over 100 Horsekeeping Skills (Horsekeeping Skills Library) (Paperback)
This book matches exactly what the title says it is providing the beginner with the basics of handling and grooming on a horse that is use to both (in my mind set it pretains to a very gentle well trained horse that is use to a lot of handling, like someone else stated a sound horse).
The pictures and text appear to be complete on how to do things right and it's my kind of book, no long winded, wasted or unneeded words to make a bigger book thus wasting my time or book shelf space.
It does just cover the basics on how to do it (not with a horse that is unruley) and on handling you will quickly out-grow the book. It does contain more information on grooming than it does handling so if you are new at that it should be very helpful.

This book really is for beginners but a great book to have. I am 15 years old and it taught me alot about horse handling. My favorite part of the book was about what kind of tack to use. It gave basic knowledge about horses which was very useful.

This book is good for beginners, intermediates, and advanced alike. With Hill's pictures and precise information, this deserves a two-thumbs up.

For beginners, Hill explains the basics of handling horses, grooming them, and washing them.

For the intermediate and advanced riders, all of this reminds them about the basic horse care. A must for every rider and horse owner!

I really feel this book is for beginner's only.
It has nice close-up pictures to explain how to halter a horse...how to check it's fit.
Shows types of ropes and snaps/attachments.
How to tie up and teach your horse proper behavior.
How to bathe and groom and clip. Also, how to care for mane and tail.
Once you have done these activites once...you no longer need the book.
However, there are those of us who HAVE NOT done it yet that need this as a reference.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money, November 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Horse Handling & Grooming: A Step-By-Step Photographic Guide to Mastering over 100 Horsekeeping Skills (Horsekeeping Skills Library) (Paperback)
I condsider myself a beginner. This book is very simplistic.
I learned most of these things in the first month of taking lessons. If you have a minimal amount of knowledge, this book would be a waste. Don't waste your time or money. I wish I hadn't.
