Book Description

September 1, 2009

Horse Lover’s Daily Companion is a unique, easy-to-use, and inspiring handbook filled with a year’s worth of insight, helpful tips, and practical advice into the equine-human relationship for all horse lovers and owners. Whether you’re a riding veteran or someone who’s simply pined away for horses since childhood, this book will provide you with a lifetime’s worth of ways to enjoy and appreciate horses, whether or not you have 40 acres and a stable of Appaloosas in your backyard, or just a shelf full of books! The format–a year-long, day-minder-type book– is not meant to be read cover to cover; rather, the book can fall open on any given day and provide insight, inspiration, and valuable information on everything equine.

Each day features rousing notions, activity suggestions, and novel facts that remind you of why you love horses:

Monday - An illustrated guide to horse breeds, from Appaloosa to the Zorse

Tuesday - Equine activities, such as riding sidesaddle, herding cows, and driving

Wednesday - Horses through the ages, from prehistory to modern equine heroes

Thursday - Behind-the-scenes access to real life in the stable

Friday - Health, wellness, and nutrition

Weekends - Bonding, relationship building, and planning special occasions

With Horse Lover's Daily Companion, you'll find a year's worth of ideas and activities that will stoke your passion for horses and inspire you to spend as much time as you can in their presence.

More About the Author

I was born in New York City, where I lived until the age of two. When I was still a toddler, my family heeded the westward call and moved to Los Angeles, where I spent my youth. I fell in love with animals and science at a young age, and played "mom" to a variety of pets including dogs, cats, rabbits, lizards, mice, hamsters, birds, snakes, guppies and a horse.

After graduating El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, Calif., I worked at various jobs including key shop manager, and cashier at Sears. At the age of 21, I returned to New York City and became a student at New York University in Manhattan. I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Journalism and a minor in Astronomy.

While living in New York, I worked for several years as an editor for a home fashion trade magazine, then moved on to become an editor for the American Kennel Club Gazette. After five years with the AKC, I accepted a position as managing editor on Dog Fancy magazine in Irvine, Calif., and moved back to the Golden State. Shortly after, I became editor of Horse Illustrated magazine. I left the position in 1995 to pursue a full-time career in freelance writing and editing.

I live in Norco, Calif., with my husband, Randy Mastronicola. We share our home with an Appaloosa gelding named Idaho Hawk (Bailey); a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Nigel; four cats named Murray, Holly, Cheddar and Stanley; and two rabbits, Prudence and Karma.

Nigel (Ninacorte Nigel Tuff S Nails, NA, NJ) and I compete in American Kennel Club agility events, and are currently working on our Open title. I am also preparing Bailey for a career in competitive trail riding.

This review is from: Horse Lover's Daily Companion: 365 Days of Tips and Inspiration for Living a Joyful Life with Your Horse (Hardcover)
Horse Lover's Daily Companion is the perfect gift for the horse lover who has everything else already. Chock full of all kinds of tips and treats about horses of all kinds, Audrey Pavia's treasure chest of information will easily keep readers happy.

What is unique about the book is that it is set up for a full 365 day year with ideas for each day of the week.

Mondays are devoted to horse breeds, both common and rare from the well known Appaloosa to the unusual Florida Cracker.

Tuesdays cover all kinds of equine activities and sports where even I, after well over fifty years of loving horses, discovered the sport of "steer daubing."

Wednesdays inspire with stories of horses in history. This may well be my favorite "day" of the book as I've always loved the legends of famous equines.

Thursdays introduce all kinds of training tips, horse behavior, and real life horse information.

Friday reminds us of horse health issues giving brief but sharp insight into diseases, treatments, general horse care and handling.

Saturday and Sunday offer up the fun where you can find a recipe for homemade horse treats or just discover a new way to spend quality time with your equine friend.

Illustrated with some often unexpected horse photography by Tom Sapp, Horse Lover's Daily Companion never fails to surprise with its original perspective. With an attached bookmark so you never lose your place this is the kind of book you can pick up, enjoy for a few minutes or savor for an afternoon of pleasant reading.
