5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed information
I find this to be the most detailed veterinary guide, short of buying a veterinary encyclopedia. Of the several I own, most are very general and have a lot of "ask you veterinarian for a course of action." This one tells you the most common treatments so you know what to expect. I go back to my dog-eared copy all the time. As I back-yard breeder, I like...

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but superficial
Years ago when I lived in the UK I had a similar book to this. Sadly I forget the title, but the size and scope were at first glance similar, and I purchased Horse Owner's Veterinary Handbook in hope of replacing that very book. Unfortunately, a deeper delve into this book reveals that it is surprisingly superficial. In my experience one could write an entire book on...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Serious Equine Health Care Reference, August 11, 2002
By A Customer

As a first-horse owner, this text was a whole lot more than I needed or wanted to know. For the horse owner who is serious about learning as much as possible about health care problems and how to treat these problems themselves, the book is a winner and probably unique. However, for someone who likes to rely on his/her vet for anything more than the usual maintenance procedures (deworming, treating minor cuts, etc.) and doesn't foresee giving his/her horse injections and the like or treating fairly serious illnesses, a less complete book would be sufficient and much less daunting. Probably an excellent reference for students of equine health and for those who would like to become vets themselves one day.

I have several books in my library which cover equine health but this is certainly the most comprehensive. The book is set out in chapters which cover the major systems of the horse - respiratory, circulatory, nervous, reproductive etc

Each chapter then starts with a complete explaination of that system and follows with an alphabetic listing of the problems or diseases.

There are plenty of clear photos and diagrams and there are two further indexes to help you to find what you are looking for or to cross-reference information. I would certainly recommend this as the book to get, especially if you can only afford to get one health reference book.

This book is awesome. I knew nothing about my horse but now I just go to the part of the body with the problem like leg and then read all about all of the leg issues and I can determine somewhat what i think she has and call the vet if I need to. Sometimes it is just a minor thing and the book tells you how to solve it in simple ways. I think everyone should have one of these and I love mine. I was calling the vet everyday and now I can treat her myself and call only when I have to!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Every Horse Owner, September 5, 2006
This Handbook is quick and easy to use. Packed with symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments, its index and contents help horse owners to quickly locate information when its needed most. Although the book only has black and white photos, they clearly demonstrate how tos, anatomy, and display common physically symptoms. The book also has charts and diagrams on every day equine topics such as worms and necessary vaccines. The last few chapters are designated to reproduction and are equipped with useful information for an owner thinking about breeding.

This is required reading for every horse owner. It helps determine whether or not you need to call the vet out for a medical problem.

Great book. Anytime i have a problem or medical issue with my horse, i can find an answer (that i can understand and follow) in this book. It has a lot of pictures in case you need to see what you are dealing with. Becareful flipping thru the book b/c some of the pictures of the illements they address can make your stomach turn. They don't hold back information. Which is one of the reason's i like this book. If you own a horse and are not close to a vet, i highly recommend this book, it could save you a lot of money at the vet and save your horses life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be on every horse owner's bookshelf!, July 19, 2007
This is a well-organized, easy to undertand book for all horse owners. When I saw the size, I was daunted, but have found it to be helpful in understanding and tending to health issues with our horses. This should be on every horse owners bookshelf!
