Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-"I'm not saying that horses will always change your life, but-I will tell you that they can if you let them-and you will never regret it." Faurie's opening words are a clue that this book is more than just a standard training-and-care manual. It is a precise discussion of nearly every aspect of care, written by an author who knows and loves her subject. One of the best features of the book is the beautiful photography. Two-page spreads and pleasingly placed smaller photos appear throughout. They capture shows, training sessions, trail rides, and, of course, the animals themselves, not as posed calendar shots, but as real views into what a life with horses has to offer. The volume is well organized and each section is elegantly summarized so as to give complete, yet concise information. Each section contains pictures or diagrams to clarify the explanations, from horse evolution and history with humans to markings, colors, and breeds. Topics such as tack, how to mount, a first riding lesson, and techniques of western riding are all simply described with wonderful graphics. The natural flow of the narrative is interesting, even to non-riders. Faurie's excellent presentation will draw teens with a love of, or even any interest in, these creatures and their care.

From Booklist

Faurie, a frequent contributor to such equestrian magazines as Horse and Rider and Dressage, has produced a fine introduction to all phases of horsemanship. Starting with a chapter on the evolution, domestication, and early history of the horse, the author moves on to a discussion of the coat colors and common breeds of horses. A particularly useful chapter discusses all of the types of tack and equipment that are needed for both horse and rider. Two chapters on the basic elements of riding, and how these skills are used in pleasure riding, lead into two chapters on care, feeding, and housing of the horse. The final section introduces the reader to competitive riding, including such events as dressage, jumping, and endurance riding. What sets this book apart from its many competitors are the beautiful color photographs. These act as both illustrations for the author's riding tips (how to bridle a horse) and as stunning images in their own right (a black Arabian cantering in a field). Heavily slanted to the English riding style. Nancy Bent
