Book Description

May 1, 2004 10 and up5 and up
Tens of thousands of kids are already competing in the horse show circuit or are working their way toward that goal. Many more are still dreaming of their first blue ribbon. This pack-along guide provides young competitors with everything they need to know about horse shows: what to bring for themselves and for the horse, what to wear, who does what at the show, show-ring etiquette, safety tips, "winning ways" to impress the judge, and much, much more.

The book also features expert advice from the pros: Cherry Hill on horsemanship and equitation, Linda Allen on hunter-jumper, Kansas Carradine on cutting, and Mandy McQuay on excelling in both Western and English riding. In addition, readers will find horse show tips from teenage competitors.

This friendly, informative handbook informs and inspires while also being lots of fun. Readers will find useful tips and checklists, behind the scenes photos from horse shows, infographics, intriguing sidebars, and cartoons. There's even space for keeping a journal, plus a Show Diary at the end of the book. This is a handbook every horse-crazy kid will love.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8 - For kids who have ever wondered if there is a certain color that complements their horse more than another, what last-minute checks they need to do before entering a show ring, how to dress for success, and much more, this handbook is invaluable. Presenting a wealth of information in a well-organized and enthusiastic manner, the author also addresses the more serious issues such as safety and good sportsmanship. The format is appealing, with lots of colorful photos of young people engaged in riding activities. Both Western and English riding are shown. Amusing cartoon illustrations are interspersed throughout, and a one-page "Show Story" in each chapter describes the relevant experience of an individual rider. For example, in "Moving Up," Jill has to decide what she wants to do with her horse now that she has taken up jumping. This volume is a treasure trove for anyone interested in showing. The advice it contains is ageless and the attractive layout and appealing pictures make it a blue-ribbon winner. - Carol Schene, Taunton Public Schools, MA

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for GIRLS, January 2, 2007
By
This review is from: Horse Showing for Kids: Training, Grooming, Trailering, Apparel, Tack, Competing, Sportsmanship (Paperback)
I was interested in the book for my elementary-aged boy who is just learning to show--thank goodness we checked it out from the library first. This book has a lot of good basic information on horse shows and how to participate. While the information presented is generally gender-neutral, the book as a whole is not. The pictures almost all feature girls, the Show Story vignettes are all about girls, even the type and background colors struck my son as "girlie". This would probably be an interesting and useful book to most young equestrians--I wish they'd presented the information in a way that appealed to girls AND boys.

4.0 out of 5 stars Horse Showing for Kids - Very Good Teaching Tool, January 28, 2008

I work with a local 4-H club that has members that show western, english, dressage and playday, I have found that the principals in this book apply to all. It asks questions of the youth that involve them, as they should be, beyond just going to a show.

We are using this book and its worksheets in our horse event projects.
