Book Description

July 12, 2005 9 and up4 and up
For any child with a passion for horses, this collection of fourteen tales, gloriously illustrated by Inga Moore, is the perfect equine companion.

Saddle up, take the reins, and prepare for an exhilarating ride through this field of horse tales! Here you'll find difficult horses and dream ponies, ponies in danger, and horses that ride to the rescue. June Crebbin's collection of fourteen stories draws on a wide range of places, times, and cultures: there are tales from Ancient Greece, fourteenth-century Mongolia, and France in the Middle Ages; traditional tales from Russia and Native America; and stories from the present day, too. The horses and ponies themselves are equally diverse — of all colors and characters — each magnificently rendered by award-winning artist Inga Moore.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8–In these 14 short stories, the remarkable nature of the horse is revealed. There are difficult horses, such as the intimidating Orange Pony at the stable, a brumby in Australia, and the legendary Bucephalus. There are also dream horses, including the Native American The Mud Pony. The selections featuring Black Beauty and Joey, a farm horse that is trained to be a war horse during World War I, are told from the animals' perspectives. There is a sad tale of a gentle mine pony ironically named Storm and a magical story of a unicorn. The offerings excerpted from novels work well as short stories here and may inspire readers to look for the full-length books. From the Mongolian steppes to Assateague Beach, each horse will win readers' hearts. This is an excellently conceived and executed collection with wonderful art (a full-page, full-color illustration per story). This book captures all of the romance and majesty of horses and their riders.–Carol Schene, Taunton Public Schools, MA

From Booklist

Gr. 4-7. Crebbin, an English writer, offers a collection of stories about horses, including selections from novels as well as a few tales from mythology and folklore. The quality of the writing is quite good, though the 14 pieces vary widely in tone and level of sophistication. British and American writers represented include Crebbin, Peter Dickinson, Marguerite Henry, Alison Lester, Michael Morpurgo, K. M. Peyton, and Anna Sewell. Moore contributes an ink drawing at the heading of each selection and many large, beautiful illustrations in watercolor, pencil, and ink. Crebbin provides a brief introduction to each selection, but no source notes, which would have been useful for the folklore. For example, the story from Caron Lee Cohen's The Mud Pony: A Traditional Skidi Pawnee Tale, here called simply "The Mud Pony," is described in the one-line introduction as a "traditional Native American tale." With fine paper, spacious design, and distinctive artwork, this handsome collection will find its audience. Recommended for larger collections and those in "horse country." Carolyn Phelan
