Not his best, but still pretty good.,
This review is from: The Horse-Tamer (Black Stallion Paperback) (Paperback)
Simply put, The Horse Tamer is an account of Henry Daily's younger days, working with his older brother for a cirus. As the title denotes, Henry tames wild horses, instead of breaking them. Along with an insight into Henry's past, the book also provides excitement as it reveals a sinister plot unfolding. The Horse Tamer was a good book; while not GREAT, it still offered excitement and made me keep turning the pages. I liked this book because it was written by Walter Farley, and I like his stuff. Also, the plot was interesting, and it gave me a background on Henry Daily. It was also a fresh change of pace from all the books about Alec Ramsey. Overall, I'd say read it. Although it's not Walter Farley's best book ever, it's still good enough to warrant a reading.

My favorite Black Stallion book,

This review is from: The Horse-Tamer (Black Stallion Paperback) (Paperback)
I read the Black Stallion first when I was seven and since then many many times. But I must say that from Black Stallion series, this was the book that I re-read the most. I find myself remembering the book often, like whenever I tie a rough rope halter or soothe a rebellious young horse. Of all of Walter Farley's books this is the most honestly horsey and the wisest. It encourages the young horse person to approach their steed with gentleness and understanding. It can even teach some of the humane techniques used by trainers and "horse whisperers." Although it is a prequel to the first BS book, it could really stand alone. If you have enjoyed Black Beauty or King of the Wind this should top your list of must reads, having much the same flavor and social agenda.

I loved this book. I think about it on trail rides when I'm riding the stallion my friend owns and whenever I ride young horses. This book has a very clear message at the end : Those who are wild at heart will remain wild forevermore.I reccomend this book to all horse lovers who enjoy reading exciting books that will put you in the edge of your seat!

I read this book when it came out. I remember that at first I was disappointed because this wasn't about Alec, or Tom, or Steve. It was about Henry back when Henry was a young boy, and about his brother. And about horse tamers, good ones and bad ones. Although I thought the book moved slowly, I felt that it was very realistic, and that the author was telling readers all the things he knew and felt about horses and how to care for them. Definitely worth reading.

This book inspired me to become a horse trainer when I read it as a girl in the 60's. It is incredible.

Not sure what I expected...,

I know I didn't expect this kind of story. My daughter and I had just finished the Walter Farley Black Stallion stories, saving this book as a good-bye to the series. We knew it had to do with Henry, how much we didn't know. Anyway, we start reading it and find Henry spending a summer with a horse taming older brother (Bill). Good so far, then it transpires into a good/evil thing between Bill and this other gentleman (Finn) Bill had worked with. I found the storyline annoying, over the top to read. Maybe it's just me. But the book lacked the usual Magic of the series.
