Book Description

December 1, 1999
One evening Mason Matthews got a phone call. Just as a singer at San Antonio's Alameda Theater was about to mount a horse backstage and ride out in front of the audience, her horse fell through the floor. Would Dr. Matthews come figure out what to do? This was only one of the dilemmas that faced the veterinarian during his nearly half-century career. Texas ranchers had emergencies as they began to stock African animals. A group of nuns running a farm needed to get their goats out of the pig feed. An exotic dancer needed her cobra defanged. In this book, illustrated by Lyn Belisle, Dr. Matthews shares his favorite vignettes from a lifetime of working with animals.

About the Author

After graduating from Texas A&M University's School of Veterinary Medicine, Mason L. Matthews spent three years in Mexico's remote Pacific coastal region helping fight an animal epidemic. He returned to his native San Antonio, Texas to specialize in the treatment of large animals, including those at the renowned San Antonio Zoo, where his first patient was a penguin with vertigo. As Texas ranches began stocking exotic game in the 1970s, he pioneered in dealing with the far-flung and unusual medical emergencies of the likes of camels, ostriches and zebras.

3.0 out of 5 stars wanting more..., August 4, 2000

This review is from: The Horse That Fell Through the Stage, and Other Tales of a Texas Veterinarian (Paperback)
Author Mason Matthews has compiled stories from his life as a veterinarian. He writes about treating exotics and traveling to foreign lands. What Matthews doesn't do, however, is go into much depth in his stories. Many of them, only a page or two long, are interesting, but are simplistic and shallow. I was expecting a heartier, beefier collection of tales. The 55 pages just isn't enough room for 18 stories. It's cute, light reading...but don't expect it to fill an afternoon.
