Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Harrod-Eagles explores the gritty underpinnings of the competitive world of show jumping by following a team of English owners, riders, and grooms through several months of races. Horses are the focus of their lives, and one in particular--a former champion named Murphy who has seemingly lost his nerve--is the focus of the story. Mary Newland is dominated by her famous brother, John, until his cruelty to Murphy provokes her into flight. Bill Simpson, a wealthy industrialist in love with Polly Morgan, acquires Murphy. Polly, in turn, is attracted to Murphy's rider, Dan, but Dan still loves the enigmatic Anne Neville, who has recently reappeared on the scene from parts unknown as muse and lover to another rider, Tom, who is on the skids. Aristocratic Howard Meaks and his groom, Chrissy, add even more complications to the mix. Those who enjoy Dick Francis will find Harrod-Eagles' drama about show jumping memorable. Lynne Welch
