New Zealand does it again,

This review is from: Horsepower (Audio CD)
New Zealand has a grand tradition of regularly producing wonderful new sounds that defy easy categorisation - Split Enz, The Clean, Headless Chickens etc. The Phoenix Foundation continues that tradition (and of course is nothing like the other bands listed). A remarkably alternative sound but ultimately beautiful songs with enigmatic lyrics that reward careful and repeated listening. A second album, Pegasus, is now also out and is just as strong - but of course different. A level of muscial structure that is simply a joy!

Like a good Pavement or Radiohead album, this one grows and grows on you with repeated listening.
The Phoenix Foundation hail from Wellington, New Zealand and as such are unlikely to get much in the way of international exposure. I strongly recommend this CD and their more recent release: 'Pegasus'. Excellent and intelligent arrangements, clever lyrics and melodies. Alternative prog-rock fro this century.

This is a band that is relatively unknown to U.S. audiences, but once they listen to the Phoenix Foundation's music, I am sure that will soon change. Start with Horsepower then you'll want Pegasus, their earlier cd. I guarantee you will be hooked. They have a new cd coming out in October, so get listening or you will be left behind. The best music I have heard in years.

Agree with the other reviewer: I'm addicted. Since getting my hands on this, I've barely listened to anything else. Especially love the song Let Me Die a Woman. No idea what the title refers to but honestly don't care. Can't wait for the new album.
